Tampopo (1986)
Member Rating:
The sophomore directorial effort from ill-fated Japanese filmmaker Juzo Itami, Tampopo is an off-beat comedy featuring several intersecting stories all related to food. Tsutomu Yamazaki plays Goro, a truck driver who helps a young widow named Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto) improve her noodle restaurant. Over the course of the film, the story drifts around, not only following the stories of Tampopo, her son, and Goro, but also a number of customers who come through the diner, including an old woman (Izumi Hara) who insists on squeezing the cheese at a market and a criminal (Ken Watanabe) with a food-based kink. Tampopo was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 1988 Independent Spirit Awards. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

Tampopo is in my video collection, because it's fun, well-crafted, witty, sometimes downright goofy and yet profound. Food, sex, life...it's all intertwined!

A cowboy rescues a widowed damsel in distress by teaching her to make really good noodles. Replete with a camp of heart-of-gold vagabonds, a gangster and his girlfriend, a sweet little boy who needs a dad, a sleazy middle-aged suitor, and a freaky old lady. Campy and fun. If you like food and sex you'll love this movie. --reviewed by Johann's girlfriend

I enjoyed this movie. Unfortunately, the DVD I watched skipped thru about 7 scenes - so I need to rent it again to get a handle on the side stories (gangsters, etc.). This movie humorously presents stories revolving around food (business lunch etiquette, noodle slurping etiquette, food with sex, etc.). The primary story is 2 truck drivers assisting a noodle-shop-owning widow on every aspect of improving her noodle making & her business. The separate stories don't seem to intertwine (but I may have missed something in those 7 scenes).

a clever black comedy from Juzo Itami, who also directed The Taxing Woman. See both.

The noodles at most noodle shops are fair to poor, but, this shop has a complex depth of flavors that will tickle your taste buds.

Watch this movie with a big bowl of the best ramen in town because you are going to get hungry! The multiple story lines in "Tampopo" tangle together deliciously like long strands of noodles twisting around a fork.
