Talk Radio (1988)
Member Rating:
Monologist Eric Bogosian's one-man theater piece Talk Radio, co-written by Bogosian and Tad Savinar, is searingly brought to the screen by Oliver Stone. Bogosian plays provocateur radio talk-show host Barry Champlain, whose constant espousal of his inflammatory views and ceaseless hectoring of his callers and listeners reaps equal parts love and hate. As his program rolls on, Champlain is revealed to be just as screwed up as any of his fans, if not more. And then he pushes one caller just a bit too far. In co-adapting the play for the screen, Stone interweaves elements of Stephen Singular's factual book Talked to Death, the story of a liberal Denver radio personality who was murdered at the behest of a militant right-wing hate group. One word of warning: if you're not a fan of the sort of radio depicted herein, chances are you won't warm up to this film. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is just one never-ending insult after another. To maker matters worse, they aren't even interesting insults. The DJ is Jewish and goes over the top to act like a stero-type and half the callers are members of the KKK who just make one ant-semitic remark after another. The bulk of this film could have been reduced to 30 minutes or less. I was actually relieved when it was over.

The writer of this movie totally stole Howard Stern's life story. Skip this one and rent Private Parts instead. That one is a true story, much more entertaining, and has a happier ending.

I remember seeing this film when it came out and was hopeful t that there would be a lot more from Eric Bogosian in the future. However, this hasn't really happened. His performance in this film is outstanding. The film is well written and presented. I highly recommend this one.

Its very amusing seeing all these New York personalities attempting to exist in a Texas environment. Love those cowboy boots and fringe jackets. How did they get there? Who would listen to this idiot, in any part of the country? Oliver Stone seems hell-bent on injecting his superior New York sensibilities on hopelessly podunk Dallas, Texas. In fact, Stone continued to grind his axe with Texas in "Any Given Sunday." He does succeed in making Texans feel grateful that he and his ilk stay up north where they belong.

I thought it was great start to finish. Really upbeat tempo to the movie keeps you locked in and enjoying yourself. The ending was so-so but at the same time kinda good. I think if you like shock radio (howard stern, mancow) then you will like this movie.
