The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant (1972) Reviews

The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant (1972)
Member Rating:
This tale of intermingled love and hate is directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and is the 13th of the 33 films he made in his short life. It explores the universal dynamics present in close human relationships, even lesbian ones. Petra Von Kant (Margit Carstensen) is a fashion designer. Some time ago, she divorced the husband she no longer loved. Until recently, she has been in a fairly satisfactory S & M relationship with her assistant. When she develops an obsession with her fashion model, however, things become far more complicated. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

The half star is for the painting on the wall in Petra's bedroom/studio, the mannequins (especially late in the film), the last 10 minutes of the movie, the costume Petra wears as seen on the DVD cover, and Margit Carstensen's perfect body stance. She is the perfect model for the costume. She resembles the manenquins in her room. No other rating stars are warranted as this movie (sorry can't bear to call it a film) is boring beyond belief. If Petra and Karin had a sexual relationship, it might have made the film interesting to show some of it. The last 10 minutes of the film were interesting and the last four minutes were great. Oh, I also love the white shag carpet.

Fassbinder has much better movies (some of them). This one is absurd, with artificial situations and extremely boring. There is no reason to waste time watching it.

Worst film I've ever seen. Kept waiting for something to happen...nothing did. Like others said, don't waste your time.

Great character study of women in Germany in the 70's . Lesbians will probably find it offensive. I would like to discuss this one with Camille Paglia, should we ever meet.

Listen to the reviewers! The plot is pointless, the characters mindless, and the directing worthless. Possiblt the worst movie ever made.

A story of sexual passion and exploitation. The acting and dialogue are great, but the cinemaphotography is the real surprise. This is Fassbinder at his melodramatic best.

Wish I would have read the only other review posted. This movie never took off and only hints at a gay theme. Another irritating feature is the fact that the movie is subtitled. Don't waste your time putting this movie in your queue. It was a total waste of postage.
