In 1939 Hamburg, Germany, a group of teenagers express their rebellion against Adolph Hitler's Nazi regime through their affection for American swing music, British fashion, and Harlem slang. American and British big-band jazz records are among those banned by the Fuhrer, but the young men secretly get together with their friends to listen and dance to the music. As their escapades become increasingly bold, they each get into trouble with the authorities. Robert Sean Leonard stars as Peter, who ends up being forced -- by a prank -- into having to join the Hitler Youth with his friend Thomas (Christian Bale). They are both engineering students at the university, where Thomas' father was taken away for defending his Jewish colleagues. With Arvid (Frank Whaley), they pretend to be Nazi supporters by day while rebelling with the swing music by night. Kenneth Branagh, in an uncredited appearance, is a glib Nazi Gestapo chief who makes matters more difficult. Each of the boys must choose among family, safety, friendship, and freedom as politics impinges on their youthful exuberance, and the Nazis set them against one another. The movie was shot in Prague, directed by Thomas Carter from a script by Jonathan Marc Feldman, and released by Disney. Barbara Hershey appears as Peter's mother. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

What a great movie. The acting is terrific... the dancing sensational, the story line - educational. It's hard to believe that life was what it was in those days, and that many had to endure such a life..... but it's terrific to see. A Must !

Plot, characters, and plot twists have all been done before; in fact, often. Upbeat dance sequences. Visually a very good movie. Authentic, atmospheric, and interesting sets and locations chosen to represent 1930's Germany. Overall, only an average movie.

Very interesting and entertaining because it brought back memories of the "Swing Band" era and "Jitter Bug" dancing. Also it is historical because it really happened. I give it 4 Stars.

I really liked this movie . It was enterttaining, educational, and was well written...until the final scene. I suppose I was expecting something more dramatic. I woud, however, strongly recommend it.

If you think you have reached saturation with WWII movies, this movie will bring you back. It shows an aspect of life in the prewar years in Germany that subsequent generations would never have guessed existed. Also it's refreshing to see a foreign group that appreciated U.S. culture, especially nowadays. Paul H.

I like this movie, because I love swing and this takes me back to its beginnings. It also injects a bit of history and some sobering troubles of the past.

Great movie. Provides insight into one facet of life for a group of youth in Nazi Germany, their love of swing music. This love is perhaps somewhat reflective of other larger things taken away by a regime of destruction.

One of the best WWII humanity movies I've seen. A must see to realize what it was like to live as a non-Nazi during that period in Germany. I will own this movie.
