A latter-day attempt to update the swordplay success of Errol Flynn movies, this film is part burlesque, part homage to old-fashioned pirate films. James Earl Jones and Robert Shaw play Nick Debrett and Ned Lynch, two pirates who save a noblewoman, Jane Barnet (Geneviève Bujold), and take her to Jamaica. They find that their friends have been taken captive by a ruthless dictator -- Peter Boyle plays the foppish villain Lord Durant with an over-the-top swagger. Debrett and Lynch set out to rescue their friends and overthrow the perverted tyrant. Beau Bridges plays Major Folly, a fancy-dressing Scarlet Pimpernel sort. A young Anjelica Huston has a minor part as a nameless woman. There is plenty of swordplay, blood, slapstick, and cleavage, all directed by James Goldstone in a frenzied fashion. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

Truth be told, this movie is what I wish the second and third Pirates of the Caribbean movies had been. A fantastic cast, wonderful action. The only things preventing me from giving this five stars are the forced romance between the two protagonists and the way the villain falls into overdone melodrama towards the end. Nevertheless, I would happily watch it again and again. (And so should you!)

Apparently the prior reviewers never saw any of the pirate movies of the 60s and 70s. This was a great movie. Lots of action and sword fighting. For those of you that remember the pirate movies before CGI, you will love it.

I loved this movie the first time i saw it 34 years ago and i love it still, it was an homage to the great pirate movies that came before it. in a time where stunt men and their stunts were real not computer enhanced this movie has it all. it makes me long for the days of real actors and live action not computer geeks and their green screens, it is truly a must see for any fan of that genre.

Gee whiz. This movie has a lot of upbeat music playing during its action scenes. Therefore, it must be a fun movie, right? NOT!!! Although nicely photographed, this is an empty-feeling "adventure" that is of interest only for an outstanding performance by Genevieve Bujold. But even that virtue is marred by an utter lack of virtue on the part of the filmmakers, for her character is forced to endure all sorts of unpleasantness. This film is seriously misguided. Fight scenes are unrealistic. Characters are not very likeable, and the plot is full of ridiculous contrivances. The film doesn't take itself seriously enough to be compelling, and the mood of "lighthearted" adventure feels totally artificial, generated by good but inappropriate music, and an unreal tone of levity among most of the actors. The result is an uncomfortable mixture of callousness and inappropriate affect.

For it's time this was not a B movie. It had a fairly large budget and quite a few top actors. It was the last of the "pirate" movies for a long time. They were only resurrected with Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean". When you watch "Swashbuckler" after seeing the Disney pirate movies, well there is just no comparison. You just have to remember that this move was made before CG and all the stunts and special effects were done in front of a movie crew and not on a computer screen.
