Suburbia (1983) Reviews

Suburbia (1983)
Member Rating:
Following up her critically acclaimed documentary The Decline of Western Civilization, Penelope Spheeris made this gritty drama her first feature-film outing. Bill Coyne stars as Evan Johnson, an angst-ridden kid living in L.A., who bands together with a group of other young societal rejects and immerses himself in the mid-'80s punk rock scene. Most of the cast was comprised of actual teenagers off the streets of Los Angeles. Among them is Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea. Suburbia is also known as The Wild Side and Rebel Streets, and should not be confused with the 1996 Richard Linklater film of the same name. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

With decent bands like DI, and TSOL the director tapped into some actual talent. The acting is terrible, but the movie holds its own. I believe it goes some insight as to why punks even decide to live the way they do. Life sucks, why live by societies conventions when they abandoned you in the first place.

This movie brings back memories of my teen youth. It was mine and my friends favorite movie in the '80's. The acting isn't great, but considering these were actually street kids it makes you think.

Stupid, boring, bad acting. Don't waste your time. A good example of why kids should finish high school and continue on to college or learn a trade.

one of the best punk movies, by far. it has good performances, and good insight. like others said, acting sucks but once you get over that it's a really good movie.

This shows that not everyone has good and even if it does one day life's gonna hit you and when it does it hits you hard. the comedy is good and the message is strong unfortunately the actors kinda sucked but thats actually how some punks sound and act. its a great insight into why punk began and why the were and still are that way. If you like Indie films or just want to say yea i watched it pick it up.
