This wildly off-beat comedy is about a male dancer (Paul Mercurio) who refuses to follow the accepted rules of ballroom dancing and creates his own style of choreography, which infuriates the ballroom dancing establishment. Before he's scheduled to compete in the Pan-Pacific ballroom championships, he's forced to take up a new partner (Tara Morice), a beginner who initially seems without promise. With his help, she turns into an assured and wonderful dancer. Baz Luhrmann's visual style may be too bright, gaudy and exaggerated for some tastes, yet he treats his characters with compassion, which makes Strictly Ballroom such an engaging comedy. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

I love dance movies, especially when the dancers want to march to the beat of a different drummer!

You have to get past the first few minutes that make you wonder what in the world is this movie going to be and then watch to see one of the best movies ever. :)

My husband loved the movie but I thought it was just okay. Kind of your typical "wrong side of the tracks" romance, with a bit of coming of age message. Cool dancing.

A delightful surprise. This movie has all the glitz and quirkiness of a Baz Luhrmann film, but tells a sweet tale of being true to yourself. The dancing is superb, and much of this predates the current craze for ballroom dancing. Some of the characters are so broadly drawn that you can't help but laugh. However, the triumph of the ugly duckling and the boy who dances to his own rhythm will resonate with many people.

Starts very slow and a little confusing. Aussie humor took a little while to catch on. Got slightly better as the movie went on. Not your best romance movie either, I almost turned it off in the begining I was so bored with it.

The dancing was fantastic, the music great, the plot silly. Two out of three makes it worthwhile.

Paul Mircurio and Tara Morice - I really enjoyed - all of their own scenes, plus those dance scenes with her character's family were enjoyable. As for the rest of this film? Ehh - not so much. I liked Baz's Moulin Rouge much better, though he directed this one quite a few years before.
