Frank Langella (Dracula, Good Night, and Good Luck.) stars in Andrew Wagner's independent drama Starting Out in the Evening, an adaptation of the acclaimed 1999 best-seller by Brian Morton. Langella plays Leonard Schiller, a once-celebrated author whose first four novels inspired Heather Wolfe (Lauren Ambrose) to pursue a career as a writer. These days, Leonard is still working toward completion of the novel that has occupied his life for nearly a decade. On the surface, Leonard has removed himself completely from the deep-seated need for success that characterized his life at an earlier point in time; but on a more buried level, he still longs for his fiction to be rediscovered and re-acclaimed. Now an eager graduate student in the throes of her thesis, Heather is writing her dissertation on Schiller, and promptly convinces him that she can use the thesis to regenerate popularity and discovery of his work. Heather also projects personal interest in Leonard, however, which cuts straight through to the core of his loneliness and brings him in touch with his need for a meaningful relationship even as it leaves him feeling shaken and increasingly uncertain. Meanwhile, Leonard finds that his relationship with his daughter, Ariel (Lili Taylor), is challenged, both by Heather's presence and by Ariel's decision to begin dating her former boyfriend Casey (Adrian Lester) once again -- a fact that Leonard finds most upsetting thanks to his disapproval of Casey. Suddenly, Leonard feels his entire world turned upside down, from his familial relationships to the security of his writing to his own physical vitality -- but he is also taking risks and plunging headfirst into the core of life for the first time, thus living out the principles long celebrated and upheld in his fiction and giving himself the capacity to grow. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

No sex, action, or violence, just great acting turned in by superb actors. The story seems simple on the surface but is quite detailed, in depth, and fascinating.

It looked like it was going to be an excellent movie. Great performances, but the story falls apart at about half way.

I really wanted to like this movie. The acting by Langella is really quite impressive and original, but I just couldn't get past the young woman/old man thing. I turned it off as soon as she says, "Let's just lie down".

Nice adult movie. All of the characters were realistic and interesting with the exception of the ingenue. I don't think that's Lauren Ambrose's fault; it's just that some of her character's actions were so improbable that they took me out the movie a couple times. Frank Langella was superb. He's definitely on my radar as an actor now. Thoughtful characters, intelligent dialogue, top-drawer acting.

This film was about real life and the characters weren't just acting..Frank Langella was being himself, not just acting..this was a person so much immerged into his persona that you felt it was for real which is what acting is all about..most impressive..one of the best I've seen this year..My hat is off to Mr Langella 4 stars!

A great film....one that mirrors what "real" life can reflect....truth, intelligence, worthwhile ambitions, tenderness and a set or moral codes and motives often not depicted in most movies.

I really do admire Frank Langelia as a great actor, however, hard as I tried and I did 1/2 doz times to watch this movie and could not get pass the Pompous dialogue, it reminds me of people on their cell phones in a bus or restaurant airing their boring lives for all to hear -- so sad.

I began to lose interest in this film pretty quickly. Having said that, Frank Langella did a stellar job as did Lili Taylor who is, in my opinion, an under appreciated actress. On the other hand, Lauren Ambrose seemed in over her head, by comparison. Would I recommend this film to others, not really.

Ugh. Why didn't I notice that Lauren Ambrose was in this? I would have steered clear. She can't act. And if she ever hopes to play a convincing role, she has to learn to tame those huge eyes that make her look like a ditzy 12-year-old. But she wasn't the only problem. Gosh, you'd expect independent filmmakers to have some fresh ideas. But instead we get the recycled, uninteresting (and unconvincing) story of a young girl who seduces an old man because she's so smitten with his art. Gimme a break. Really. Oh, and then a pointless subplot about two people who have a rocky relationship but can't stay away from each other. Original! And then all the nonsense is tied up with a pretty little ribbon at the end. How satisfying.

It was hard to imagine a 25 year old, an aspiring writer going after her Master's Degree, getting romantically involved or infatuated with a senior citizen. This man looked to be old enough to be her grandpop, not her father. Granted, they had writing as a common thread, however it just seemed to me to be OFF THE WALL... meaning VERY UNBELIEVEABLE!!!! It made me laugh when I knew I should have felt some seriousness.
