Member Rating:
This Biblical epic stars Elana Eden as Ruth, who serves in the temple where the High Priestess (Viveca Lindfors) leads the worship of the Pagan idols of the people of Moab. When Ruth falls in love with Mahlon (Tom Tryon), a Hebrew, she must come to terms with his spiritual beliefs, but in time she embraces his faith and converts to Judaism when they marry. Ruth travels with Mahlon and his mother Naomi (Peggy Wood) to their homeland of Bethlehem. Ruth suffers hardship and religious persecution, and when Mahlon dies, Ruth's faith is severely tested. But her belief in God survives this trial by fire, and in time Ruth finds a new love with Boaz (Stuart Whitman). ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

If you truly read the book of Ruth in the bible, you will get the real story. It does reflect that Ruth was from Moab, married a Elimelech, was widowed and went to Israel, gleaned in the field of Boaz, married Boaz. All the stuff in between is pure Hollywood and much a stretch from actual biblical text. I challenge you to actually read the book of Ruth before seeing the movie.

This movie is the first I've ever seen about Ruth and I will say that I loved watching this movie. The first half of the movie concerns her life in Moab and in the movie she was a priestess of the God Chemosh. She meets a young Jew and becomes very interested in him and this leads her to eventually leave Moab and marry him. He dies and instead of going back to Moab decides to accompany her mother-in-law back to the land of her birth. When she gets there she is treated with disdain for being a Moabitess, even though she's embraced the Jewish faith. She meets Boaz and their complicated relationship begins. The movie is a very nice one to watch the dramatization of the well known, but not told often enough story of Ruth, the woman whose line would eventually lead to Jesus. The movie was very well done in the spirit of the Book itself. I think the acting was very well done, the costumes fun and lively and the direction well done also. It's a keeper.

This is a great movie with all the old hollywood glamour. The actress in this film is gorgeous. The details about the customs of Moab are pretty accurate. It is a good movie to watch when you want to see an awesome love story. A story of redemption, faith and sisterhood.
