Stormy Weather (1943) Reviews

Stormy Weather (1943)
Member Rating:
Built around the premise of a Big Stage Show, Stormy Weather affords rare "mainstream" leading roles to some of the era's greatest African-American entertainers Lena Horne, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Dooley Wilson, Cab Calloway, Katherine Dunham, Fats Waller, and the Nicholas Brothers. The thinnish plotline -- dancer Robinson has an on-again-off-again romance with Horne -- is simply an excuse for lively, well-staged performances. Of the fourteen musical numbers, the most memorable is Lena Horne's rendition of the title song, artfully staged by director Andrew L. Stone. Keep an eye out for uncredited contributions by jazz greats Zutty Hamilton, Coleman Hawkins and Taps Miller. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This was a pretty good movie. You will definitely like the final scene when they do the big show. The final dance scene with the two brothers is amazing, and to my understanding was done in one take! Incredible!!

I just loved the talent in this movie; it was both entertaining and I learned how some trends came about. The music and dances were amazing at times. Originally I got it for my dance class, but I ended up watching several times and really enjoyed the entertainers and performances. Linda S 'John

The first thing I like about this movie,Fats Waller, Bill Robinson, Cab Calloway, as well as the rest of the cast, The music was great. The other thing I like about this movie is that it isn't filled with a lot of dirty language, and no nude scenes. unfortunately times change. Chris K.

The story is rather ordinary, but the music - that’s something else. Imaginative musical numbers, nicely produced and the talent involved is remarkable and truly amazing. One of the best musicals from the 1940’s.
