In this film version of E. L. Doctorow's Billy Bathgate, Loren Dean plays the title character, a street-smart kid who inveigles his way into the confidence of 1930s gangster Dutch Schultz (Dustin Hoffman). Billy is ordered to look after Schultz' new moll, Drew Preston (Nicole Kidman), while Dutch fends off tax evasion charges and such up-and-coming rivals as Lucky Luciano (Stanley Tucci). Even though they know they're playing with dynamite, Billy and Drew fall in love. In attempting to escape Schultz' wrath, Billy succeeds only in putting himself in the thick of a gun battle between his boss and Luciano. When "Charley Lucky" emerges triumphant, Billy is forced once again to rely on his wits to escape being sent to the bottom of the briny in a cement overcoat. Bruce Willis shows up in an extended cameo as Dutch Schultz' former business associate. Billy Bathgate was adapted for the screen by British playwright Tom Stoppard. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
This movie was very good. It wasn't as good as Goodfellas, Casino, or the Godfather but it still had a great story. If you like gangster movies than this is a must see. The only criticism I have is that I would have liked to have seena little more violence.
This movie isn't one of the greatest of all time, but it is still an enjoyable movie. Dustin Hoffman plays the part of the hot-tempered and cold-blooded gangster very well. If you are into mafia movies, this is a must see.
This is a very unique movie. This was a movie that reflected bad timing and just public ignorance. I think this movie was Dustin Hoffman's chasing his dream on his missed chance of getting the Micheal Corleone role in Godfather. Nicole Kidman is appearing in a before they were stars role, and she does a good job all in all. I think what killed this move was uneven acting and gratuitous nudity. If you are a Dustin Hoffman fan, (either a fanatic or casual), I recommend that you skip this movie to keep your opinions of the great actor of our generation high. Not that great of a movie over all, with no character to feel for and not much of a plot to follow. :-(
Nice movie...I wasn't expecting Dustin Hoffman's role to be so evil and he was convincing. I also didn't expect Bruce Willis to make such an early exit. Decent flick, overall. I love Movies about the old New York.
Wow, this movie took so long to develop and the characters were so one dimensional. I was begging for a good long bloodbath at the end which never came. I guess showing Nicole Kidman naked a few times was supposed to keep me interested but not with her jungle growth down south and tiny tata's. Anyway, it was ok but could have been better
I was unable to view the movie. The DVD would not work because of imperfections. This has happened on previous DVD 's received from you. If they continue to be useless, I will discontinue your services.
