Member Rating:
Two French peasants are mistaken for a pair of aristocratic nobles in this historical situation comedy. Gene Wilder and Donald Sutherland play the dual roles. Happy to be taken for nobles, the pair soon runs to escape the guillotine in the wake of the French Revolution's blood purge of the upper class and royalty. Hugh Griffith play Louis XVI, with Billie Whitelaw as the amorous Marie Antoinette. The pair are chased by the evil Duke d'Escargot (Victor Spinetti). Orson Welles appears at the beginning and the end of the film as the narrator. Wilder and Sutherland encounter a variety of comical situations in their dual roles of peasants and blue-blooded eccentrics. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Remember sexual innuendo? Humor that hinted and toyed with sex in a clever way without hitting you over the head with expletives and in your face visuals? This is funny, timeless, non-jaded stuff. Make it a trifecta about french history with Cheech and Chong's "The Corsican Brothers" and Leo as "The Man in the Iron Mask.

I saw this film as a kid and thought it was hilarious - saw it again recently for the first time in years and still thought it was just great. I think it helps a lot with the humor if you're acquainted with the works of Alexandre Dumas (Corsican Brothers, Man In The Iron Mask) but it's wonderful even without that. Gene Wilder is magnificent and Donald Sutherland perfect. Many suble and brilliant touches throughout. Highly Recommended.

This is a non stop laugh out loud CLEAN FUNNY movie! It features a young Gene Wilder and Donald Sutherland at the top of their form - and intro by Orson Wells! I am so happy to be able to watch it again and again, and strongly recommend it to anyone who wants a hilarious 'silly' diversion.

Too much stupid and not enough funny. Couldn't watch more than a few minutes.

I love Gene Wilder but this has to be one of his worst efforts I have ever seen. Basically a prince and the pauper story doubled which reduced the enjoyment by half. One would have to actually know a little about history to appreciate any off it and I'm afraid anyone under 40 wouldn't "get" any of it. Absolute dud.
