Part 1 of Steven Soderbergh's Che Guevara saga stars Benicio Del Toro as the legendary Argentine revolutionary. The film opens with Che as one of the important figures in the growing Cuban rebellion led by Fidel Castro (Demián Bichir). The movie charts how the two successfully built an underground army large enough to successfully overthrow the government of Fulgencio Batista. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi
The acting in this movie was superb, but the narrative really sugar-coats Guevara's and Castro's ruthlessness. Che himself executed many middle class Cubans on the way to Havana (never even hinted at in the film), even when they assisted the revolutionaries. His role in the Cuban intervention in Angola is not covered at all in the film-- Castro knew that Che was a threat. It goes to rounding out the complexity of the character- while on the march in Cuba, Che NEVER bathed or washed his clothes, even when the opportunity presented. His men called him 'el chancho' (the pig). If you really want to get a balanced view of this important man, don't rely only on this movie for the truth. I'd highly recommend Motorcycle Diaries to understand his early years and how he morphed from a gentle Argentine med student to a revolutionary terrorist. And there are several books that deal with a balance of the good AND the evil in the man.
As a former History teacher, I would have liked a captivating historcial narrative. They somehow took the fascinating part of it and gave you the mundane. I won't be going onto Part II
this acting is ridiculous. they speak english! and the guy who plays che looks nothing like him; he looks more like Pau Gasol! This was terrible! For a good one see Che starring Benicio Del Toro!
This movie misses a lot of detail and is just a propaganda film to promote "Che" as a hero. They definitely missed the innocent killings that took place in Cuba after they took over Havana; the land/business nationalization by Fidel; CIA involvement in trying to take Che alive at the end. Great famous actors making their cameo will not change my mind. Marxist ideology is good on paper, but making it work is another thing. Just look at Colombia and their Marxist rebels; look at destruction created by communism in Eastern Europe before you start glorifying Castro and Che.
I WANNA SEE BENICIO AND ALL THE OTHERS LIVING IN CUBA THEN THEY CAN THEY CAN REALLY CALL THEM SELF COMUNIST BUNCH OF HIPOCRYT CHE AND ALL THE CASTROS ARE A BUNCH MURDERS I ONLY REALLY SORRY FOR THE MEMORIE OF CAMILO WHO WAS FULLISH BY CASTRO AND CHE AND HE IS ONLY PURE REVOLUTIONARIE AND THE ONLY CUBAN HERO OF THE REVOLUTION
