A Star Is Born (1976) Reviews

A Star Is Born (1976)
Member Rating:
The third remake of the 1932 drama What Price Hollywood?, this adaptation of A Star Is Born moved the story into the mid-1970's and changed the milieu from the movie business to pop music. John Norman Howard (Kris Kristofferson) is a rock star whose career has peaked; he is numbed by booze and cocaine, his music has lost its edge, and his performances have become painfully haphazard. One night, after a concert, he stumbles into a club where he sees a singing group fronted by Esther Hoffman (Barbra Streisand). John likes what he hears and loves what he sees; he tries picking her up, but soon realizes if he wants to see her, he'll have to ask her out on an actual date. He does, and before long the two become involved, although Esther has trouble with John's rock star lifestyle. One night, a typically burned-out John lets Esther sing a few songs at one of his shows; before long she's the talk of the record business. While Esther's star begins to rise, John's continues to sink, and while she desperately tries get John to clean up and focus on his music, it may be too late to save him. The song "Evergreen" earned this film an Academy Award for Best Song; the credits contain the amusing notice, "Ms. Streisand's Clothes from ... Her Closet." ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This is perfect for any Barbara Streisand fan. She was quirky, but beautiful. As always.

My wife wanted to see this again, 35 years later. It's still engaging, though if you're not a chick who loves bawling over movies, it won't have the impact it maybe did the first time around. I didn't time it, but I'd say there's more time spent singing than on the plot, which isn't all bad. Streisand may be a wacko, but man, could she sing! Hers was one of Hollywood's glorious voices, and she showed it off to great effect in this movie. Kristofferson never could sing (well, maybe better than Bob Dylan), but he wrote great music, and they're both better than average actors.

This movie was released at the time I was involved in a relationship with the 'great love' of my life. I believe we saw this movie at (as I recall) Gauman's ChineseTheatre on Hollywood Blvd. Anyway, I digress. This is My favorite Bab's movie of all times. I was a fan then & and remain so today. Attended TWO of her farwell tour concerts. And I will go again, if We should be so lucky. The movie and it's story were relevant in the in the original version in 1937; the first remake in 1954 and GREAT in this 1976 wonderful remake. Please don't misunderstand. I am not writing such a great ''Five Star review because I adore Barbra Streisand's wonderful voice; which she plays like a finely tuned instrument ; as well as her ability to play a variety of roles and make them all believable; THIS IS TRULY A WONDERFUL MOVIE.

The least successful version of the classic Hollywood story. Only comes to life when Streisand sings. And Kris Kistofferson !?? What were they thinking? Really quite awful. If you want to see the best filmed version, get Judy Garland's 1954 classic with the amazing James Mason as Norman Maine.

This is one of those movies that a woman can watch, over and over again! Kristofferson is great in this wonderful romantic love story of all time! I cry in this movie, every time I watch it. I have the sound track to this movie and listening to it on the road; takes me back to the movie! I believe this is my most favorite kristofferson's movie ever!

This is one of my all time favorite movies! Anyone who remembers the 70's (and those that were there but don't remember) should watch this move. Especially women. Be ready to cry!
