Richard Fleischer directed this nightmarish science fiction vision of an over-populated world, based on the novel by Harry Harrison. In 2022, New York City is a town bursting at the seams with a 40-million-plus population. Food is in short supply, and most of the population's food source comes from synthetics manufactured in local factories -- the dinner selections being a choice between Soylent Red, Soylent Yellow, or Soylent Green. When William Simonson (Joseph Cotten), an upper-echelon executive in the Soylent Company, is found murdered, police detective Thorn (Charlton Heston) is sent in to investigate the case. Helping him out researching the case is Thorn's old friend Sol Roth (Edward G. Robinson, in his final film role). As they investigate the environs of a succession of mad-from-hunger New Yorkers and the luxuriously rich digs of the lucky few, Thorn uncovers the terrible truth about the real ingredients of Soylent Green. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Well, you have to have grown up with it to really love it, I think. Great story idea, but poorly written, I think. Like "I am Legend," if they re-made this one, the computer generated effects would blow the orginal out of the water, and make it seem somewhat silly besides being dated. I shouldn't have rented it, should have left it in the decades old memory bank of my brain, cause now I watched and thought, "Man, they could really make this great if they did it today!" Charlton Heston is, of course, classic cool, and only an actor of a Wil Smith calibur could ever hope to recreate Heston's coolness.

Way ahead of 21st century. Yet there is never ending question. Will it ever run out? One could never answer that question. I noticed scenes or parts of this film; I just viewed entire version on DVD. Must see for ocean-concerned people.

The disc was cracked, so I never got to see the movie. I saw it many years ago and liked it then, and I was curious if I would like it now after so many years. Many of the discs are arriving cracked lately, which has been really disappointing.

This could have been done so much better. They focused more on the live-in prostitutes of the future than anything else. It was slow and not very exciting.

When you think about the expanding powers of plutocracies, exponentially exploding population and the consumer's diminishing control of their food supplies, it isn't hard to see why other reviewers say that this movie was way ahead of its time. I really dislike Charlton Heston, but for this movie that's appropriate. Just as terrifying as Big Brother.

Gee I cant count how many times I saw this at the drive in when it came out. I think the message is hauntingly close to what the future with over population and global food shortages will lead to, Maybe not in 2022 but someday....this move is a classic celluloid prediction for the future. Should be remade and shown to the new generations...

A very old movie that is not far off from the truth.... We just may be heading there today. Very good.

Great concept but poor execution. The plot "twist" is too obvious.

Interesting but chilling sci fi film. Charlton Heston and most of the cast provide very wooden performances but the one bright spot of the movie is Edward G. Robinson in his very last movie - great performance. Worth watching once
