Southern Comfort (1981)

A handful of part time soldiers unwittingly turn a field exercise into a miniature war in this offbeat action drama from writer and director Walter Hill. A group of National Guard reservists are sent to Louisiana on a chilly weekend for war games exercises. None of these weekend warriors seem especially happy to be there, especially laid-back Spencer (Keith Carradine), tightly-wound macho man Reece (Fred Ward) and transplanted Texan Hardin (Powers Booth). While making their way through swamp country, the reservists discover their maps are out of date and they've become lost. Rather than march back to camp and start over, they decide to "borrow" several canoes they've found by the banks of the bayou, which should put them back on track. When a Cajun local catches the soldiers stealing his canoes, Stuckey (Lewis Smith) fires a few rounds in his direction; for the purposes of their exercises, the Guardsmen have been given blank shells, so Stuckey imagines this is a harmless way to scare the man off. However, the Cajun soon returns fire -- with real bullets. After Poole (Peter Coyote) is killed by a shotgun blast, the Guardsmen find themselves lost in a place they do not understand, surrounded by angry men determined to drive the unwelcome visitors off their land at all costs. A taut and atmospheric action film which is also serves as an intelligent and evocative metaphor for America's role in the Vietnam war, Southern Comfort also features an excellent score by guitarist (and frequent Walter Hill collaborator) Ry Cooder. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

For one thing, the actors are not "unknowns" and they are excellent in their depictions of the characters they portray. This movie is nothing like deliverance; however, it holds some of the same characteristics. Enjoy!! This move is worth the rent but don't worry, no one squeals like a pig...

This movie is a must for Powers Boothe fans, southern movie buffs and a really good movie about what not to do as a National Guard reservist.

This movie was worth renting. As far as the plot goes, it either says a lot about our National Guard units back then or someone was just a bit too loose with their interpretation of how they conduct themselves. The acting was great so the plot didn't seem so far fetched. I'm not sure you could compare this with Deliverance exactly but there were a few parts with that same feel to it. Good flick to watch but whoever wrote these characters made all of them very stupid. It's about the only weakness to this movie.

I thought that this movie was very good although it was not a huge success when it came out in the 80s. Some scenes are especially disturbing (PETA members beware). But I think the graphic nature of the movie was necessary as toning it down would have been detrimental to the story It was an interesting man vs. man and man vs. nature story. Highly recommended.

To me, a definite five stars movie! All star-cast and a story that I could follow and kept interested during the whole movie. Not a whole lot of women, just the way I like it until the last fifteen or twenty minutes. Then again, these women in the movie weren't super models like you see now; so my husband didn't have a wondering-eye if you know what I mean. I wish they made movies like these and less focus on beautiful women.

I do not understand how so many people give this movie such high marks. It DOES deliver in action and suspense; however, the plot is disjointed and incredible. And the ending stinks on ice. Some people compare it to "Deliverance," and there are a handful of similarities...but this movie is nowhere near as good as "Deliverance." I think two and 1/2 stars is being generous.

This is an interesting movie where a group of national guard soldiers accidentally start a war with some backwoods french poachers. pretty soon people are dying and things begin to look bleak. most of the actors are unknowns (at least to me), but they do a good job.
