Member Rating:
Stephen Fry, Jemma Redgrave, Joseph Beattie, and Alex Pettyfer star in director Dave Moore's adaptation of Thomas Hughes' timeless coming of age tale. The time is the mid-1800s, and Tom Brown is a timid student at Rugby Public School. Confronted with relentless bullying, the homesick schoolboy makes the transformation into a courageous student who isn't afraid to face life's obstacles by confronting his fears, standing up for what's right, and fighting to overcome the many pratfalls of adolescence. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

british schoolboys left to their own devices. smoking, drinking, gambling, and fighting. canings, rape, and rich people elitism. special friendships, standing up to bullies and for what's right. i thought it was a very good movie.

A gritty and at times gruesome adaptation of an important 19th-century novel. In the context of current concerns about bullying in our schools, it puts things in historical perspective. As always, Stephen Fry is sublime.

We really liked this movie, but I was surprised to find that there is objectionable material. The lessons learned by this young man in boarding school are timeless. But they are also learned from watching young men who are "high" on their wealth, their power, and their lustful desires! SO, the caution to families...you need to screen it first, and if you see fit edit out the small but impacting parts where a young woman is raped, as well as some early materials these young men are looking at, that are very un-family friendly. So, a wonderful movie, with some cautions needed!

Don't watch this movie unless you are over 18. The movie has a good story... But they overdid it with the sociopath he was a very twisted guy. This movie has, harsh beatings, drinking, smoking,a fight with a kid about 12 and a kid about 18,a kid moons others, a bar scene with prostitute, rape, and murder all done by the guys in the school. Also the head master beats some of the kids, because of things the boys should not have done but it was done very harsh. Over all the message was to stand up to bully's and be true to your self but it could have done with out a lot of the stuff. If it was rated it was a easy Pg-13 or R. -Tessa

Interesting story but rough to watch at times. Not for everyone! "Alex Pettyfer" is very good in "Tom Brown's Schooldays". But he is even better in "Alex Rider-Operation Stormbreaker", a kid spy adventure film.

"This was a intriging story about a boy named Tom Brown, how attends an all boys school in the 1800's. The story shows how he goes to this school, a school a rife with all sorts of illegal actvities and matures as a person. He alsp helps a young boy, Aurther out of his shell. All in all, a great familyy film."
