Samuel Fuller's valedictory war picture, The Big Red One follows the First Infantry Division from Africa to Europe during the years 1942 through 1945. Lee Marvin portrays the division sergeant; he's tough and experienced, to be sure, but he takes on his job with cool professionalism rather than Hollywood bravado. Based on Fuller's own experiences, the film is a loosely constructed series of anecdotes. Among them are an insane asylum under bombardment while the inmates applaud and a climactic vignette in which a very young concentration camp internee dies while a friendly soldier plays piggy-back with the boy. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Marvin was great (as always) as the stone faced leader of four guys who make it through WWII. Not much in the charicter development department, but who cares, it's a sit back and relax type of war film.-Stone

Follow the Big Red One from it's beginning to it's fabled role in WWII. The all-star cast delivers an incredible perfomance. This is a must see guy movie or anyone else who enjoys great movies period.

In an age with realistic war films, this film has dated poorly. You never really get to know the characters except by name. No character development whatsoever, which doesn't make you care for them. For the hell that the 1st Division went through in WWII, the boys in this film seem to have had an okay time. So much of what happens in this movie doesn't leave any lasting impressions. For example - half of the minute or so sequence with the battle of the bulge is deer and rabbits running around.....Um, what? All in all, I feel dumber for having wasted my time with this. The characters and the story (is there a story to this film?) is as flat as a board, and if anything this film is a disgrace to the 1st Division. WASTE. OF. TIME.

Nice 80's war movie, Lee Marvin Fan will enjoy it. Classic soundtrack, overall a decent watch if you like war movies.

I just watched this, in 2006. It was recommended to me as similar to Saving Private Ryan for battle. True, there was a lot of battle, but the editing seemed to choppy, the characters not developed enough, and seemed more like a bunch of short stories. Not sure if I really liked it or not.

Worth a look, but still a let down, considering that director Samuel Fuller was a WWII combat vet. Despite a few very powerful vignettes, much of it plays out like a t.v. series ,like "Combat!",or "Rat Patrol". Lacked the budget to take on such a hefty subject. "Band of Brothers" is far superior.

I remember loving this movie when I was a kid. Watched it again as an adult. Different story. Acting stunk. Story line full of gaps. Try Patton or the Longest Day instead.
