In 1973, health-food store owner Miles Monroe (Woody Allen) enters the hospital for a routine gall bladder operation. When he expires on the operating table, Miles' sister requests permission to cryogenically freeze her brother's body. After 200 years, Miles is unwrapped by a group of scientists and awakens to a "brave new world" of deadening conformity, ruled with an iron fist by a never-seen leader. Miles is forced to flee for his life when the scientists -- actually a group of revolutionary activists -- are overpowered by the leader's police. He eludes the cops by pretending to be an android, and in this guise is sent to work at the home of Luna (Diane Keaton), a composer of greeting cards who thinks that the world of the future is perfect as it stands. There's more, but why spoil your fun? Sleeper is the most visual of Woody Allen's earlier films, and demonstrated a more pronounced rapport between Allen and his off- and onscreen leading lady Diane Keaton than had previously existed. The Dixieland score is performed by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

One of Woody Allen's best - Funny lines, mixed with some slap-stick. Really liked this fast-moving movie.

I'm not a (insert synonym for large/big/huge) Woody Allen fan but I really enjoyed this movie. The one-liners were great and gives you a glimpse of what people in the 70s thought the future would look like. Also, my wife and I couldn't get over how young Diane Keaton looked.

While all of Allen's early comedies are pretty wonderful, this film represents a big leap in technical proficiency. For the first time you sense him really thinking about how the camera is telling the story. And in finding Diane Keaton, Allen was finally paired with an actress who's comedic strengths were a great match for his. This film relies less on verbal jokes (although there are brilliant lines) and more on visual gags. It almost feels like you're watching a great silent comedy at times. . Better music too, with jazz taking over from traditional score the first time in Allen's films. A funny, inventive, sophisticated if sometimes wonderfully silly comedy, with almost no dead moments.

Get Bananas instead. There are a few funny moments in Sleeper but if you weren't around during the 70's I think you might miss a lot of the jokes. Bananas was made around the samtime but I just thought it was a whole lot funnier.

Great example of Allen's "Earlier, funnier" work. Many memorable lines. Might seem a little slow and low tech by today's standards, but it probably influenced a lot of comedy and scifi films that followed it.

It's strange but fun all the way through. Don't expect a big ending.

Don't pass this one by. Very funny SciFi classic. The future is here. Rather low budget look at times, but that is part of the charm. This is one you should own.

One of the other reviewers was in fact correct...if you want to enjoy a good Woody Allen movie, it's Bananas, Annie Hall, or Hannah & Her Siisters. Thanks alot, I'm here all weak!
