Sleepaway Camp (1983)
Member Rating:
A deadly boating accident derails the life of a sensitive youngster, leading to confusion, madness and murder. Years after the incident, Angela (Felissa Rose) is still withdrawn and rarely speaks, living a sheltered life with her aunt and cousin Ricky (Jonathan Tiersten). The two young teens are sent off to Camp Arawak to spend the summer, and though Ricky attends every year and has plenty of friends, Angela is unable to fit in and finds herself the target of cruel taunts from her bunkmates. Her cousin is always ready to stick up for her, and she begins a timid romance with Ricky's best friend Paul (Christopher Collet), but it isn't enough to stop the abuse from their fellow campers. Soon a series of fatal accidents is plaguing Camp Arawak; a pedophilic cook is scalded alive, a practical joker drowns mysteriously and the boys' restroom becomes the scene of a horrific bee swarm attack. The campers are fleeing in droves, and the few who remain begin suspecting foul play. But who is the killer? The camp's owner (Mike Kellin) believes that the killings are only meant to ruin his business, and he's convinced that the hot-tempered Ricky is to blame. When the evening of the camp social arrives, it proves to be the bloodiest night of all, and a terrible secret is revealed in a bizarre confrontation on the beach. This offbeat slasher mystery (also known as Nightmare Vacation) has earned a sizable cult following for its twisted sensibilities and inspired a pair of direct-to-video sequels. ~ Fred Beldin, Rovi

Great little film and much better than the slew of 'Friday the 13th' rip off films of the time. The ending is probably one of the best from the genre (and arguably films in general from the past 20 years). Believe me, you will not see this one coming at all....

This horror movie has proably more of impact on me then others this was my first horror movie watch it freak me out when i was kid, It is another low budget 80 horror movie but unlike the other horror movies this one stands out for its twist.

Classic, Classic!!! I am a sucker for a good slasher movie - and this is GREAT!! Of course, it's from the 80's when ALL the good slasher films came out. Now, this can't compare to Halloween because Michael Myers is the SCARIEST character EVER...but I was very impressed. I would definately recommend this!

I'm sure it was much more scary to see this when it originally came out than today. I still like Sleepaway Camp 2 the best for some reason. I find it much more "scary" and gory.

It's Friday the 13th meets Carrie meets The Crying Game...only a thousand times worse than any of those. I actually like the two sequels better, especially the second one.

This is arguably one of the most hilarious and enjoyable of the cheesy low-budget 80's horror/slasher films. I especially enjoyed the cameo by James Earl Jones' brother as a cook. It's also fun to sit back and count all the infractions and lawsuits this place would have been subject to in real life - not counting the murders, of course - such as the old man that owns the place setting up a dinner date with one of the teeny-bopper camp counselors that works for him, cooks that don't wash their hands (or bodies, apparently), roaches running around in the background, etc.

This is pretty much a typical 80's horror type movie. It's not as bad as some I've seen.

A cheesy and lame excuse of a horror film. It is beyond low budget with pathetic cardboard acting and an overall pathetic production in every aspect. The story is silly and badly executed, and then tries to deliver a major plot twist in the ending that itself is silly and somewhat predictable.

These are they type of movies why I switched to typing paragraphs instead of short sentence. Firstly, this movie was very good and entertaining until the last 10 seconds of this movie. If they made the movie the way they could have, it would be an 8/10. But the ending is so twisted and disgusting it ruined everything it did so right, even if the plot makes sense with the horrible twist.
