Two men answer the call of the ocean in this romantic fantasy-adventure. Jacques (Jean-Marc Barr) and Enzo (Jean Reno) are a pair of friends who have been close since childhood, and who share a passion for the dangerous sport of free diving. Professional diver Jacques opted to follow in the footsteps of his father, who died at sea when Jacques was a boy; to the bewilderment of scientists, Jacques harbors a remarkable ability to adjust his heart rate and breathing pattern in the water, so that his vital signs more closely resemble that of dolphins than men (he even considers a school of dolphins as his extended family). As Enzo persuades a reluctant Jacques to compete against him in a free diving contest -- determining who can dive deeper and longer without scuba gear -- Jacques meets Johanna (Rosanna Arquette), a beautiful insurance investigator from America, and he finds that he must choose between his love for her and his love of the sea. Le Grand Bleu ran 132 minutes in its original French version, but it was trimmed to 118 for American release, with the original score by Eric Serra replaced by music from Bill Conti. While the film did middling business in the U.S., it was a huge success in Europe, and director Luc Besson released an expanded 168-minute version in 1998. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This is one of my all-time favorite films. I saw this movie originally in France and it was a huge hit. I can't figure out why so few people in America have experienced this movie. Beautiful locations, wonderful visuals, very interesting story (love the dolphins) and stand-out roles by Rosana Arquette (yes, really!), Jean Reno (the Specialist, Mission Impossible), and why Jean-Marc Barr never became a huge star out of this movie, I will never know. I hope this review spawns at least a few people to see this movie, it is really beautiful and charming!

This movie sums up everything that should be in a movie. Excellent soundtrack, stunning visuals. This movie must be watched with the original musical score by Eric Serra and not the Bill Conti version (US Theatrical release) which was good, just not GREAT like Eric Serra’s version.

This movie is wonderful! I saw it when it first came out here in the US and loved it then! I just watched it again and fell in love with it again. The acting is superb and the love stories (between Jacques and the dolphins, Jacques and his first girlfriend, Jacques and Enzo, Jacques and the ocean...)are extemely poignent. I hope you first timers understand the ending...I must own it so I may watch it again and again

The film is visually stunning, set in and around the ocean at a variety of world destinations. The just under the surface underwater work (filmed by Besson, himself a diver) is so beautiful, so serene. The story itself could be seen as a bit metaphorical, but still very human. The kinds of people who pursue deep free diving share some personal attributes of other purists like rock climbers, base jumpers, extreme high altitude snowboarders, and big wave surfers. That is; moments of pure awareness while being completely peaceful and relaxed although utterly engaged with the moment. Besson captures that feeling with this film.

A bit too long, but very interesting in a European film sort of way. I like the friendship and romance aspects, as well as the cinematography. And it's hard to deny that Rosanna looks good naked. But the ending was predictably a downer.

I found this movie to be slow and unfulfilling. I kept thinking it was going to have some great message but it never developed for me. My husband and I both felt we wasted over two hours of our time watching it. Don't recommend it.

Jean-Marc Barr and Jean Reno were great but I really didn't like Rosanna Arquette. The movie was too long but beautiful scenery.

Movie was not what I expected, not a great beginning, ending and or plot. This movie kind of just rolled without giving any emotion that an individual might feel when watching a good movie. Definetely would not recommend.

Wish I could remember who recommended this movie. I'd send them a bill for my time! Kept on watching just hoping it would redeem itself somehow. While there was an attempt to create conflict by pitting the main character's longing for the sea against his waxing & waning desire for human love, the story meandered so much the conflict not only never resolved -- it barely came up for air. Don't bother making room in your que for this one.

Unless you have very unconventional tastes in movies, don't be fooled by the good reviews on here the way I was. About the only good thing I can say about this movie was there was some nice cinimatography. The dialog was like a big gaping hole that never got filled, the plot was non existant and the pace could bore a sloth into a coma. I'm into scuba diving and even the underwater aspect of this thing could not keep me awake. Unless you are looking for a cure for insomnia, don't even waste your time on this.
