Lawrence Kasdan's Silverado is a fond hark back to the all-star, big-budget westerns of the 1950s and 1960s. The various plotlines converge at the town of Silverado, held in thrall by crooked sheriff Brian Dennehy and his behemoth "deputies." The four disparate heroes--Kevin Kline, Kevin Costner, Scott Glenn and Danny Glover--prepare to do battle against Dennehy for personal reasons ranging from mercenary to altruistic. Sidelines characters include duplicitous, dandified gambler Jeff Goldblum, frontier widow Rosanna Arquette and gimlet-eyed saloon owner Linda Hunt. The film is stolen hands-down by Kevin Costner, playing an irresponsible young gunslinger who never speaks when hootin' and hollerin' will do. A classic, High Noon-style showdown caps this rousing retro western. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
All star cast, classic western storyline and still holds up perfectly for today. Not dark and gritty like Unforgiven it's more like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Played it for my friends (mid-late twenties) and they loved it.
A great cast makes this a very good western. More reminiscent of westerns from the 1950s (all of the towns are neat and tidy, the actors clean and well-dressed) rather than the down-and-dirty look of spaghetti westerns and newer cowboy movies. Lots of fun with the good guys - especially a young and goofy Costner - beating the bad guys.
I like the movie. Just a great western with lots of familar faces. My favorite was watching Kevin Costner... zanney, fancy free character with a goofey smile on his face and fearless. Jefff Goldblum is has his usual dry sense of humor. Enjoy the show!
Very enjoyable sideways, witfilled, serious gun fighting storyline with top actors carrying a desert dry-mouth western period piece. The cadence in the drama and editing was greatly appreciated. Wonderful entertainment!
This is a good movie. It can be a little slow paced at times but overall it was enjoyable. ***What I most enjoyed about this one is the music score. Sure loved the brass intruments they had in the background music!
If you're one of those left-wing pansies who believes that there is never a need for violence, then this movie is not for you. There is real evil in the world, and it ain't reasonable and it it is not willing to negotiate. Sometimes you just gotta vanquish it. This is an awesome western with an all-star cast (watch for Sheb Wooley!).
