Filmmaker Bill Guttentag takes a closer look at the atrocities committed by the Japanese after Nanking fell to the Imperial Japanese Army in 1937 with this documentary that was inspired by Iris Chang's novel The Rape of Nanking. Compiled from over 700 hours of footage including news-reel footage, interviews with survivors and soldiers, and staged readings, Nanking was financed in large by millionaire Ted Leonsis, who had read Chang's obituary and subsequently been prompted to read the author's best-selling account of the massacre. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Excellent documentary of the Japanese invasion of Nanking in the 1930's. The unusual format - having actors read from the diaries of people who were there to witness the events made the film highly engrossing. Original footage added complete authenticity.

Shockingly real. Having lived in Japan and admired the Japanese, this was hard to take. They still are trying to cover and forget about it in Japan. It convinces me, moire than ever, that war for any reason, is wrong. A story that needed to be told.

This was a very moving documentary. I had no idea that the atrosities existed before seeing this film. The use of real survivors made this film authentic. They could not have made up these recolections and the pictures that were preserved are proof that this did happen. This action discused me as much as the Nazi extermination of the Jews. What would ever drive people to doing this?

Excellent but very depressing. Man's inhumanity to man. No laughs or humor here. Watch it and aquire an education.

To understand China today you need to understand this story and the impact of the invasion by the Japanese. This film does a remarkable job of bringing to life one of the saddest stories of recent history. While not historically “perfect”, the film touches upon those person stories that give the viewer a good idea of what occurred…and it was horrific. The movie is easy to follow and maintains the viewers interest throughout…there are no boring parts. It is one of the best docudramas I have ever seen. I highly recommend reading the book as other reviewers indicated.

Keep buying your Japanese cars-I hope the next movie is about the American prisoners of war that were used for medical experiments by the Japanese-while they were awake and completely aware of what was happening.
