Fernando Meirelles' adaptation of Nobel Prize-winning author José Saramago's novel Blindness begins when an epidemic of blindness strikes the world. Mark Ruffalo stars as an eye doctor who awakens one morning to find that he suffers from the unexplained disorder. He, along with other victims, is sent to a government detention center so that they can be quarantined. His wife (Julianne Moore) pretends to be blind so that she can be with him inside the institution. Their time in the center grows more and more desperate as food and supplies dwindle, and one of the other citizens (Gael García Bernal) exercises dictatorial control over the others after he acquires a weapon. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

This is not a recommendation. This is a horrifying tale. However, the movie is based on a story written by a nobel laureate. Something insightful, reflective is surely going on here. The question is asked "Who am I when the rules of society break down?" Am I the doctor (the moralist or chicken, if you like) who remains upright even when it jeopardizes his life? Am I the wife (the amoralist, fox) who is moral when it does not jeopardize her survival and the survival of her husband? Am I the brutish Hitler/Stalin Immoralist (the wolf, the King of Ward Three) who lords it over the slavish? Who am I when I cannot be seen? It 's good to know who you are and who the others around you are in time of crisis. Thank you, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo for an incredible job with difficult and thankless roles.

Interesting way of exploring the depravity of human beings when conditions reduce them to live in deplorable conditions and try to survive as our pre-historic ancestors. The reference of characters are likened to how the Holocaust survivors endured and some how survived the horrors or WW2.

I truly truly wish I'd read the reviews before renting. I saw most of the movie as it sped by while I fast-forwarded it. I only caught not even 10 seconds of the assault scene but it was an agonizingly long 10 seconds. I get that the movie is supposed to pose questions, but I'd hoped that it would've been at least a little entertaining along the way. There's no redeeming value.
