From director Bernardo Bertolucci, The Sheltering Sky is a filmed adaptation of the novel of the same name by Paul Bowles. Debra Winger and John Malkovich star as Kit and Port Moresby, a married American couple who globetrot to North Africa in the late '40s with the hopes of re-sparking their love and adding some zest to their lackluster lives. Along for the ride is the pair's friend George Tunner (Campbell Scott), who soon begins having an affair with Kit. As they struggle through the numbing heat of Africa amidst the sudden love triangle, each of the trio sees his and her beliefs and lives challenged. The Sheltering Sky earned a Best Director nomination for Bertolucci at the 1991 Golden Globe Awards. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi
I liked this movie. If you intend to watch it, mind the details given about the movie. Sexual content did not bother me since it was between husband/wife. Nudity made the movie erotic. Considering the opinions of the masses about this part of the world today, I found the story intriguing; and though slow in places, the turn of events kept my attention throughout. To be sure, people of the western world would find this a strange environment, just as the characters in the story did.
Well, I, for one enjoyed this movie very much. It showed many scenes from North Africa that were interesting. In addition, I thought the acting was good. It was a very unusual movie that had a lot to offer.
The movie was great the scenery exquiste and I thought the overall story was well written and it kept you attentive for changes throughout the whole movie.

This movie is like a train wreck. Amazingly bad considering the amazing cast and beautiful cinematography. However, if you like train wrecks I would high recommend it.
this is a good example of something with a bunch of really good people in it but it still falls flat on it's face. Poor, poor writing in general...what could these terrific actors/actresses (esp. D.Winger, who is just great) do with ? Not a lot and they didn't. What I don't get is why such quality people would be part of this? Splain somebody? I'm still mad at myself for watching the whole thing ...I kept thinking...this is going to pick up and get better....noooooope, didn't happen and at the end, you feel really stupid for wasting your time. oh well, lesson learned.
