This is a routine Disney comedy-fantasy about a boy who turns into a large sheep dog at the most inopportune moments. That is assuming there would be opportune moments. Young Wilby Daniels (Tommy Kirk) finds a magic ring that used to belong to the Borgia family. When he pronounces an inscription on the ring, he is suddenly able to transform himself into a shaggy dog -- though he has no control over when this is going to happen. To his dismay, the girl he likes gets involved without knowing who the dog really is. At the same time, the only way Wilby can break the spell is to perform some virtuous deed. Fortunately for him, a few Soviet spies are just hanging around, waiting to be uncovered by a canine. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Yes, the acting is less than Oscar level. Fred MacMurry especially seems off his game. The plot is hokey and predictable. In spite of all its shortcomings, this is still a good fun movie that has several legitimate funny moments. The fact that it's colorized also made it much more watchable for my kids.

My family and I enjoyed this movie. The story while being predictable was cute. There were some funny moments. This is a classic family movie, that shouldn't be missed.

This was a fun movie and we really enjoyed it again. We saw The Shaggy Dog years ago with our kids. Fred MacMurray was one of our favorite Movie Stars. Sam Adair

I actually selected the wrong move, I thought this was the new version w/Tim Allen - this movie being "old" was terrible.
