I did not like this movie. I am a Hector Lavoe fan and have a lot of his cd's, I use to see him live almost everytime he went to Puerto Rico. What I didn't like about the movie is that the movie majorly focuses on his drug addiction and not on his huge talent as a singer. Hector was truly an excellent singer and a person that was part of the creation of the genre known as Salsa. I understand that he had an addiction that eventually killed him but to focus the movie on drugs instead of his talent is an insult to Salsa music and his fans. I also don't remember seeing his wife dancing next to him in any of his shows, but I guess they felt the need to include Jennifer Lopez in every scene which is good for the eye but not for the story. I was disapointed. I expected to see the life of Hector from his childhood to his death. Every scene was filled with J-Lo and namely her ....assets. It was ok but that's all. Marc Anthony did a fantastic jobs....there was also too much cursing. Was this review helpful? Yes

The music in the film is great! Loved Marc Anthony's performance! This would have to be one of Jennifer's best performances. Was this review helpful? Yes

Well, what can i say, I've watched this movie so far 4 times, each time I get into it more and more, Marc and J Lo really made me feel like if I was viewing Hector and Puchi's life, they have played these characters with the heart, almost as if it was they're lives. I love the music of Salsa, and I've heard Hector's music before not knowing who he was, I love his music, he talked about what he felt, what his life experiences were, how could you not fall in love with music like that. My props to Marc and J Lo for this movie, like J Lo said in the making of the movie, she didn't care of people liked her or not, she wanted people to really see her character as Puchi, and Marc being the character of Hector. So, in less words, Yes, this movie is by far the best movie both have made. I hope they get to play more characters like this, but hey, there will only be one Hector and Puchi movie after this one.

My husband and myself are big fans of Hector Lavoe and all the other salsa greats of his time. Everyone knows that Lavoe was the pioneer of salsa and who better to depict his life but Marc Anthony, the best salsero of this generation. I feel that Marc did a great job and holds a very close physical resemblence to Lavoe which makes the movie very real. As for the rest of the movie I was greatly disappointed. I felt the movie was all J.LO and not enough Marc...if it's all about Jennifer why call it "El Cantante" and not "Puchi". I understand that the movie is based on an interview with Puchi and therefore told through her eyes. With that said I still feel that had more emphasis been put on Marc it would have made for a better movie in the end. Was this review helpful? Yes

WOW! I'm not even a fan of marc or jlo to be honest, but they did a outstanging job. The movie protrayed a flawed humanistic Hector Lavoo, whom pioneered Salsa. I grew up listening to Lavoo records and the music in this movie brought me back to all those wonderful memories. Ironic, really that a man like lavoo brought so much happiness to so many, yet was truley a prisioner to his own demise. I say "own" because so many critics blame "puchie" for Lavoo's downfall, which is terrible. Because, you cannot reason with a junkie, no matter how much you want to help, It just goes to show you that no matter how rich, loved, and famous one may get, we still find ourselfs fighting our own demons. VIVA! LA SALSA! Was this review helpful? Yes

Three things, 1. If you are not Puerto Rican or do not like Puerto Ricans, you won't like this movie. 2. If you do not care for Salsa, you will not like this movie. 3. If you do not appreciate Marc or J-Lo, you will not like this movie. That's all you need to know. You can guess by my 4 stars what I am and what I like. Was this review helpful? Yes

They tried to make a legend of Hector Lavoe, but he really wasn't, he was just a singer, and for people don't know music history apparently he invented the Salsa, (commercial name used to denominate the Cuban music, son, mambo, cha-cha-cha, guaracha, bolero, etc... played by cubans and boricuas in New York) Was this review helpful?
