Like thousands of other Manhattanites, Tom Ewell annually packs his wife (Evelyn Keyes) and children off to summer vacation, staying behind to work at the office. This particular summer, the lonely Ewell begins fantasizing about the many women he'd foresworn upon getting married (in one of the fantasies, Ewell and Marguerite Chapman parody the beach rendezvous in From Here to Eternity). He is jolted back to reality when he meets his new neighbor--luscious model Marilyn Monroe. Inviting Monroe to dinner, Ewell intends to sweep her off her feet and into the boudoir. Things don't quite work out that way, thanks to Ewell's clumsiness (and essential decency) and Monroe's naivete. Still, Ewell becomes convinced that his impure thoughts will somehow be transmitted to his vacationing wife and to the rest of the world, leaving him wide open for scandal and ruination. In the original play, the husband and the next-door neighbor did have an affair, but both play and film arrived at the same happy ending, with Ewell and his missus contentedly reunited at summer's end. Featured in the cast of The Seven Year Itch are Robert Strauss as a lascivious handyman, Sonny Tufts as Evelyn Keye's former beau, Donald MacBride as Ewell's glad-handing boss, and veteran Broadway funny man Victor Moore in a cameo as a nervous plumber. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This comedy can only be fully appreciated with repeat viewing. Tom Ewell steals every scene and the film could never be what it is without him. Marilyn is so charming in this film, she easily pulls her own weight making this film a timeless must-see classic. If you enjoy comedies and classics, I can’t think of a more rewarding experience than "the seven-year itch".

When renting this movie, the expecation was for another great Marilyn Monroe flick. She usually sparkles and has great characters even when they are the typical "dumb blonde". This movie did not deliver that. It is more focused on the male lead and his struggles with a "middle-life crisis". For me, there is too much fancy and not enough content. Also, if I never hear Marilyn say delicate again, that will be wonderful. The dialogue was repetative and mundane.

Dull as toast, with only rare moments of humor or entertainment. Other than the signature scene with Marilyn's skirt and the subway grate, it's a pretty uneventful flick. I wouldn't recommend it.

A classic that must be seen again Neither Marilyn or Tom Ewell had been recognized as excellent actors. After 50 years we can appreciate and see how great they were.

This movie is most famous for the iconic skirt-blowing scene, but it's worth watching for Monroe's blend of seductive innocence and savvy insight into the male psyche. Tom Ewell is an unlikely leading man, but his comic talent is up to Axelrod and Wilder's snappy script. Every time I get lulled into thinking that movie-making demands thousands of jump cuts, a movie like this one shows me that a clever script and good acting can rivet an audience even if the camera rarely moves within a scene.

At today's standards it's kind of silly but a cute movie just the same. Very funny.

This movie was long, very long, tedious, dissapointing in having Marylin showing up in scattered sequences while most of the movie is taken by this non attractive male actor in such a pathetic role. No wonder the poor girl ended comitting suicide. Where did they get this guy to put in a leading role anyway ? he probably had money or was somebody's cousin.

Good story line and great music. Nice flash back to the 50's I grew up in. Unfortunately, the DVD disc Blockbuster sent was in poor condition and "hung up" during play back several times.
