Akira Kurosawa's epic tale concerns honor and duty during a time when the old traditional order is breaking down. The film opens with master samurai Kambei (Takashi Shimura) posing as a monk to save a kidnapped farmer's child. Impressed by his selflessness and bravery, a group of farmers begs him to defend their terrorized village from bandits. Kambei agrees, although there is no material gain or honor to be had in the endeavor. Soon he attracts a pair of followers: a young samurai named Katsushiro (Isao Kimura), who quickly becomes Kambei's disciple, and boisterous Kikuchiyo (Toshiro Mifune), who poses as a samurai but is later revealed to be the son of a farmer. Kambei assembles four other samurais, including Kyuzo (Seiji Miyaguchi), a master swordsman, to round out the group. Together they consolidate the village's defenses and shape the villagers into a militia, while the bandits loom menacingly nearby. Soon raids and counter-raids build to a final bloody heart-wrenching battle. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

I put this movie in my queue knowing that it was only the first disc...but I'd heard so many good things about the movie I wanted to at least see SOME of it! I can say that the 1st disc didn't dissapoint...but now I'm left hungering to see the rest! I wish Blockbuster would do a better job of including ALL discs for a given movie when they make a multi-disc piece such as this available (I had a similar problem with the "Ghost in the Shell" DVD they offer-I got the "special features disc...but not the movie itself)!

This is a classic! If you're a Japanese film buff you should watch this. It is in black and white (don't let that hinder you) and subtitles (anime fans shouldn't mind) but it's funny as hell! Plus Toshiro Mitfune!!! Watch Shogun if you can get ahold of it. You won't be dissapointed, humor, sword fights, honor, blood...it's a samuri film try it out.

I loved this movie!!!! Even with the subtitiles.. I don't think I would have enjoyed it any more if it was in english. I think that would have taken from the film. I highly recommend this movie.

This monumental film in the Japanese film history looks dated today. The Bluray version offers some, but not significant, improvement. I also found the length of the film taxing. Given proper cutting and re-editing, this film may produce more impact with a new life.

Great classic Samurai film. I don't know if I did the director's cut version or not, but I think they could have shaved off about a half hour of the film if they took out un-needed whining and crying from the village-people. I rated it a 4 specifically for that reason, otherwise it would be a classic tale of the underdog rising up and succeeding.

This was a great movie. Extremely well done and entertaining. One of the best subtitle movies I've ever seen. Enjoy.

One of the few foreign language films I've ever seen, where the combination of acting, cinematography, editing and soundtrack, all orchestrated by Kurosawa, is so logical and dramatically brilliant, that you forget you're watching a film reading subtitles. The actors express themselves with so much passion and accuracy that following this marathon of storyline is effortless and fascinating. Kurosawa's editing genius stands out in the end as the poetic voice telling us the story, which Shakespeare himself would have been impressed. But what sets this film masterpiece apart from many others is just how exciting all the action is. phenomenal -masterpiece.

A mixing of the traditional Samurai way on the decline, a little comedy. My kind of movie, I give it a 3 star and recommend for watching
