Italian filmmaker Lina Wertmuller directs the black comedy Pasqualino Settebellezze (Seven Beauties). During WWII, Pasqualino Frafuso (Giancarlo Giannini) ends up lost in a dense forest along with fellow army deserter Francesco (Piero De Orio). After they witness a mass execution by German soldiers, Francesco admits his moral opposition to the Nazis and Pasqualino reveals his criminal past in a series of flashbacks. Back in Naples, he was known as "Pasqualino Seven Beauties," a petty thief who lived off the profits of his seven sisters while claiming to protect their honor at any cost. When Totonno (Mario Conti) pimps out his sister Concettina (Elena Fiore), Pasqualino kills him, chops up his body, and mails each piece across the country. He is then arrested and sent to a mental institution, where he commits sexual assault against another patient. Kicked out of the asylum, he is sent to fight in the army. The Germans capture him and he gets sent to a concentration camp. He then plots to make his escape by demoralizing himself in an attempt to seduce a German officer (Shirley Stoler). Seven Beauties was nominated for four Academy Awards in 1977, including Best Foreign Film. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

The over the top acting by Giancarlo Gianinni is his life's best. Lina Wertmuller has him casted perfectly in this sweetbitter, horrifying, sidesplitting, screaming denouncement of silence through farce. Fernando Rey is superb as is Shirly Stohler. The story is well paced in the novel style of storytelling, and the music score is haunting. A movie you will not forget. OH, YEA.

Truly one fo the great movies. The director plays with your emotions by swinging from comedy to grief. Great portrayals by the entire cast especially Gianinni and Stoler. I re watched it after 30 years and it had just as much impact.

"Seven Beauties" reputation has faded, as has that of Lina Wertmuller, whose sexually political movies ("Swept Away") made her a critics' darling forty years ago. That's a shame because "Seven Beauty" is just as powerful now as it was back then. Giannini is magnificent and there are fine contributions from Bunuel regular Fernando Rey and Shirley Stoller, a woman whose piercing eyes and puffy face always reminds me of a straight razor stuck in oatmeal. It's not until the stunning final moments that the real theme of the movie becomes clear. Instead of championing survival at any cost, it asks us to weigh the cost of living when the soul has died. Unfortunately, this edition is non anamorphic and ought to be remastered for better quality. The disc does include, though, the Engish dub.
