Romeo and Juliet (1936) Reviews

Romeo and Juliet (1936)
Member Rating:
Director George Cukor and producer Irving G. Thalberg's adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, a lavish production of Shakespeare's tale about two star-crossed lovers, is extremely well-produced and acted. In fact, it is so well-done, that it is easy to forget that Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer are too old to be playing the title characters. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

As Blockbstr review says, it's good although Shearer & Howard are too old for the parts, but that was Hollywood then. But after seeing Franco Zeferrelli's '68 movie, there's no camparison. Still, I've never seen the famous Norma Shearer in anything, but she certainly had talent. Altho in BW, you can see that Thalberg and Cukor put alot into the costuming, sets and ballroom scenes. Catch Andy Divine in a serious role and not a Western. those '30's men looked great in tights!

This is such a classical romance movie. It tells the story of two famlies that have been fueding for years. But that hasn't stopped the younger generation from falling for one another. The two are so in love, one would die for another. Overall: on the old side, but a beautiful 19th century play.
