Covering some 15 years, The Right Stuff recounts the formation of America's space program, concentrating on the original Mercury astronauts. Scott Glenn plays Alan Shepard, the first American in space; Fred Ward is Gus Grissom, the benighted astronaut for whom nothing works out as planned; and Ed Harris is John Glenn, the straight-arrow "boy scout" of the bunch who was the first American to orbit the earth. The remaining four Mercury boys are Deke Slayton (Scott Paulin), Scott Carpenter (Charles Frank), Wally Schirra (Lance Henriksen) and Gordon Cooper (Dennis Quaid). Wolfe's original book related in straightforward fashion the dangers and frustrations facing the astronauts (including Glenn's oft-repeated complaint that it's hard to be confident when you know that the missile you're sitting on has been built by the lowest bidder), the various personal crises involving their families (Glenn's wife Annie, a stutterer, dreads being interviewed on television, while Grissom's wife Betty, angered that her husband is not regarded as a hero because his mission was a failure, bitterly declares "I want my parade!"), and the schism between the squeaky-clean public image of the Mercury pilots and their sometimes raunchy earthbound shenanigans. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is one of my favorite movies. But be warned that if you rent this from Blockbuster, you will get the old-fashioned, decrepit, double-sided disk from the mid-1990's. Half the movie is on one side, the other half on the other side. If you don't mind getting up in the middle of the movie to flip the disk over in front of your guests, then have at it. Otherwise, send Blockbuster an e-mail telling them to update their disks.

if you try to rent this online, BB just sends you the special features disc and not the film. disc 2. BB quality control is poor.

This is an excellant movie for entertainment and for historical content. If you want to remember the early days of space exploration or to learn about it, this is the movie for you. It follows the adventures in acurate ways. A very enjoyable movie

While the movie was excellent in content, information as well as entertaining, the language is not PG appropriate and a heads up on the language would have been nice.

If you do not like this movie, then you really have bad taste in great film. This is a great piece of american cinema. It is one of the best space drama's ever made. I have 3 favorites, The Right Stuff, Apollo 13, and the fictional 2010: The Year We Make Contact.

Great stuff, great theme music, great cast, and narration. Deserves to be remastered and rereleased in Blu-Ray with an outstanding 5.1 sound mix. First saw it on Betamax.

Here's a movie that succeeds because of a spectacular plot. It's hard to imagine a story being told these days about the space program that wouldn't be dominated by special effects. Far from it - the SFX in this movie are little more than puncutation marks in a fantastic story. Add to it that this story is true, and it simultaneously makes you proud to be an American and angry that people of character have become so hard to find in this country any more.

This wasn't the DVD I ordered...I wanted the original film but this turned out to be a very interesting documentary on how the movie was made.

This movie is on my all-time top 10 list. I find the stories of these astronauts both fascinating and awe-inspiring. If you've ever wondered what it must be like to have lived the life of an astronaut, this is the movie for you.
