The true story of one of World War One's deadliest air aces comes to the screen in this historical drama. Manfred von Richthofen (Matthias Schweighöfer) becomes fascinated with flying when he's just a boy, and as a young man he joins the German army and becomes part of their budding air force. Flying in a squadron with his best friend, Werner Voss (Til Schweiger), von Richthofen is a pilot with a great talent for aerial battle, but he also has a sense of honor and fair play, and he and his cohorts often pay tribute to fallen opponents by dropping wreaths over the wreckage of their planes. When von Richthofen and Voss discover a Canadian pilot, Capt. Roy Brown (Joseph Fiennes), who has been stranded in German territory, they rescue the flier rather than leave an enemy soldier to die, and while bringing him to safety Manfred meets Käte Otersdorf (Lena Headey), a military nurse who has devoted her life to helping those wounded by war. Manfred becomes deeply infatuated with Käte, but while she is also taken with him, she cannot abide his open embrace of the blood sport of war, and even as he becomes one of Germany's most decorated pilots, downing countless enemy planes, he comes to understand the true horror of war and the consequences of his actions. Von Richthofen gains an even greater perspective on war when he encounters Capt. Brown one last time. Der Rote Baron (aka The Red Baron) was shot in both German- and English-language versions, with the same cast appearing in both. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Von Rickoven was an interest to me for many years. I read all I could about him including his auto-biography. Unfortuneately, This movie was not only far from reality, it depicted someone that did not even resemble this great aviator and warrior. Someday a movie will be made that accurately describes this great aviator's life and philosophy. Unfortunately. this is not it.

Sappy story, distorted history, amateur computer graphics. The red baron spends so much time gazing sappily into the eyes of his personal nurse and love interest that the movie could have been shortened and strengthened by editing it out. Severe sappy historical distortion: the baron gallantly saves the life of a crashed enemy pilot who will turn out to be the man (Capt Roy Brown)who was to be credited with shooting him down (no spoiler - it's history) and not only that, they meet again midway through the movie and have a sappily chivalrous conversation. Amateurish computer graphics have a game boy feel. The planes are all brightly painted and sspic-and-span clean. In one of the battle scenes a fighter roars in from three oclock passing directly over the cockpit of a British bomber - as if the bomber was standing still hanging on a sky hook. Night dogfight is total baloney. We don't even get to see the Baron shot down, just another sappy scene involving a white scarf. Puhleeeeze!

Disappointed. There was the chance for a good movie here, given the topic, but the quality was lacking.

Very good movie.I heard about the Red Baron Of World War I but didn't know to much about him .The movie gave me an idea how airplanes were used in World War I and what he was all about

Laugh out loud funny, but not for reasons the filmmakers intended. Rent this only if, like me, you'll watch any movie about fighter planes, even with a student film-quality script.

Terrific movie, IMO. The old cars, trucks, bikes, and airplanes are stunning, and the aerial sequences put to shame any of the recent takes on WWI (Flyboys, etc). The movie does take a few liberties with Richtofen's story, but to good effect in fleshing out what could have been a very dry biopic. This one is a must-see for aviation fans and history buffs, and gives a great overall take on WW1. Highly recomended.

This is a decent movie about aviation. There are a few stunning scenes of aerial dogfights in particular the one set at night. Although the use of CGI planes strains believability in parts. Even though the film is set in WWI you can still feel that elements of WWII crept in. The attention to Jewish pilots and their contributions to the war is hammered very blatantly in dialogue and in the epilogue. One of the controversies in Germany about this film was people were worried that there would be too much emphasis on patriotism. Sounds like the opposite problem that we would have here. I suggest that if you are interested in aviation, world wars, Germany, or want to see a war movie reflective of post-war Germany this is a good rental.
