This low-budget film from Alien scriptwriter Dan O'Bannon (his first film since the 1985 zombie hit Return of the Living Dead) is one of the more loyal adaptations of fantasy author H.P. Lovecraft, taking as its source the short story The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Set in Lovecraft's home town of Providence, Rhode Island, the story involves the investigations of hard-boiled private eye John Marsh (John Terry) into the mysterious activities of Charles Dexter Ward (Chris Sarandon). It seems that Ward is becoming increasingly obsessed with the occult practices of his distant ancestor Joseph Curwen (also played by Sarandon) who was reputed to have found the secret of resurrecting the dead. Much to the horror of his wife Claire (Jane Sibbett), Ward is slowly being possessed by Curwen's malevolent spirit, and he is compelled to perform horrible experiments on the locals in pursuit of his goal. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Solidly executed low-budget horror from the time before smirking, self-referential horror movies with teen and early twenty-something kids took over. Dan O'Bannon knows how to direct and tell a creepy story. The acting is largely good and the special effects suitably icky. Sadly, the film is not presented in widescreen and there are no extras on the disc.

Although the action tends to bog down in places, this is a very enjoyable film for all us low-budget horror fans. The acting is acceptable and despite the budget, there are some gruesomely excellent zombie effects. Most Lovecraft fans will probably be outraged, but I liked it.

I was pleasantly surprised with this one. Lots of good reviews and rightfully so. Original and fun to watch - good acting too. Man, when the lights went out in the cave I definitely thought to myself - "uh oh!"

Although he was never very popular in his lifetime, HP Lovecraft has become one of the most popular American horror writers in the past 30 years or so. He only wrote one novel, "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" and this is an adapation of it. Although a number of elments are changed (the protagonist in this is a PI, not the family doctor), it's still very much the same story. I don't really want to give away spoilers, but basically, this guy starts acting very strangely after discoving some notes and books of an ancestor, one who was a black magician. His personality changes, and his family (in this case, his very attractive wife) worries about him. So she hires a PI to investigate. What he discovers about Ward is quite disturbing. While this was a low budget movie, the effects were quite stomach turning. And unlike some other adaptions, like "Reanimator", this is done seriously. As a HPL, I was quite impressed at how good this was. Cheesy in places due to the low budget

We were talking the other day about how they always remake truly classic movies with modern hollywood actors, and their always a disappointment, because you can't hope to recreate the magic of (for example) the original "Inlaws". We agreed that The Resurrected is the type of movie that should be remade. The story is basically good, and the special effects OK, but this one could really stand an infusion of production values and acting. Still a good movie, but it needs remade.
