Repulsion (1965)
Member Rating:
The first English-language film of director Roman Polanski is a psychological thriller in the vein of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) and his own later film Rosemary's Baby (1968). Catherine Deneuve stars as Carol Ledoux, a Belgian manicurist living with her sister, Helen (Yvonne Furneaux), in a London flat. Simultaneously attracted and repulsed by sex, Carol is a virgin who finds her sister's relationship with a married man, Michael (Ian Hendry), extremely disturbing. When her sister and Michael go on holiday, Carol begins to disintegrate mentally, hallucinating bizarre encounters, being forced into taking a sabbatical from her job and ultimately committing a pair of murders in her deranged state. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

For its time, its a good film. I love the way the camera stuck to the face of "Carol" throughout the film. Its not frightening at all but a legit psycho-thriller for a movie from the 60's. Enjoyable but surely not hard to figure out.

This was an interesting film but I would have liked for the movie to have answered some obvious questions like why did Carol get the way she was and what happened in her childhood. It needed more background information. The ending was unsatisfying to me.

I actually enjoyed this b/w film. The story was an interesting follow and the actors were very supportive. Considering the erra of this making, Excellent horror for that time.

Personally, I believe that this stoic, black and white movie is truly innovative for its time in the 1960's. Roman Polanski truly does a great work in this movie when he presents in this psychological thriller the world of a mentally-handicapped female named Carol, who is the main subject in this thriller. The clues that Polanski leaves in the movie throughout various scenes defines the ultimate theme of the movie of how mentally disturbed is his main character, Carol, in Repulsion. This is what I found very effective in the movie of how the director leaves subtle clues throughout the movie to define how mentally deranged is the character, Carol, of the movie. These are the reasons why I really liked this movie. I would highly recommend this movie to others who are of an AGE-APPROPRIATE AUDIENCE. You should see this movie at least once to experience a different type of movie experience.

This movie shows it's age with the overly dramatic and "noirish" photography. Very confusing and boring.

I guess it was once creepy and artistic to make films about characters with mental illness. It is just plain sad today. If you want to watch this movie for the merits of Polanski's film-making techniques or Catherine Deneuve's acting, then that is all well and good. Both are in fine, 1960s form. But as for the story itself: This movie would be a good case study for students of psychiatry or psychology to play "Guess Her Illness" or "What's Wrong With Carol LeDoux." All the men in this movie are sexual predators and jerks, and all the women are either subservient dolts or old hags who have sold their souls for their husband's favors. This could have been a good movie to explore the then-emerging Women's Lib attitudes, but instead it just seems to say that if women would stop being so frigid towards men, all their problems would go away.
