Delmer Daves directs the noirish thriller The Red House, based on the novel by George Agnew Chamberlain. Edward G. Robinson plays Pete Morgan, a farmer who harbors dark secrets and refuses to let anyone near the red house in the woods behind the house. In order to fend off trespassers, he hires Teller (Rory Calhoun) to stand guard. He lives with his sister, Ellen (Judith Anderson), and his adopted daughter, Meg (Allene Roberts). When they hire Meg's friend, Nath Storm (Lon McCallister), to help out on the farm, the two kids start to wonder about the mysterious red house. The film features an eerie original score by Miklós Rózsa. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

Good film, great score ruined by a poor transfer by Madacy. Grainy film, tinny audio. Find a better edition.

I remember this movie very fondly, and so my review may have more to do with nostalgia than with the film's actual worth. Not the best transfer you'll ever see, and in many scenes, the sound is pretty bad. However, don't let that stop you from queuing this one up, because it's a good, solid mystery tale. Edward G. Robinson is Pete Morgan, a man with a dark secret in his past; a secret that must soon come to light. Have you ever tried to run away from a scream? You can't! Especially when you're too close to the RED HOUSE.

Amazed to find this on dvd, unfortunately the transfer is really no better than the one used on the old vhs release. But I'm reviewing the film, not the disc, the film is at times campy, creepy and is really elevated by Edward G Robinson's appearance. Besides, I remember when all movies I watched at home were on an old black & white tv with snowy/grainy broadcast picture. So, for me it kind of adds to the effect. Highly recommended lost classic!
