Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a taciturn law-enforcement officer from Russia. James Belushi co-stars as a wise-lipped Chicago cop. Though they go together like caviar and White Castles, they are forced to team up to collar the Soviet Union's most notorious drug lord. Thus does director Walter Hill recycle his 48 Hours formula for another unlikely star team. Unfortunately, Red Heat isn't half as enjoyable as the earlier film, owing to a lack of rapport between the two leading men and an overall lack of inspiration infecting the whole project. The one notable aspect of Red Heat is that it was the first commercial American film to stage scenes in Moscow's Red Square. A great fish-out-of-water buddy cop movie starring Jim Belushi and Arnold Schwarzenegger and featuring supporting roles by Peter Boyle, Laurence Fishburne, and Brion James. Arnold is a Russian policeman who comes to the USA following a cop killer and drug lord while Belushi has to try and keep him in line with American police procedure. As you might expect, Arnold's going to do what Arnold wants to do and Belushi's loud-mouthed swagger can't stop him. While the two don't have the most electric on-screen chemistry, this is an average to above-average crime/action film. Red Heat is notably gritty ala 48 Hrs., but generates more smiles than its predecessor. Entertaining, but a B-grade Lethal Weapon.
