Based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier, the classic psychological thriller Rebecca was Alfred Hitchcock's first American film. Joan Fontaine plays the unnamed narrator, a young woman who works as a companion to the well-to-do Mrs. Van Hopper (Florence Bates). She meets the wealthy widower Maxim de Winter (Laurence Olivier) in Monte Carlo, where they fall in love and get married. Maxim takes his new bride to Manderlay, a large country estate in Cornwall. However, the mansion's many servants refuse to accept her as the new lady of the house. They seem to be loyal to Maxim's first wife, Rebecca, who died under mysterious circumstances. Particularly cruel to her is the prim housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (Judith Anderson), who is obsessed with Rebecca. She continually attests to her beauty and virtues (referring to her as "the real Mrs. de Winter") and even preserves her former bedroom as a shrine. The new Mrs. de Winter is nearly driven to madness as she begins to doubt her relationship with her husband and the presence of Rebecca starts to haunt her. Eventually, an investigation leads to the revelation about Rebecca's true nature. Producer David O. Selznick had the final cut of the picture, which was drastically altered from Hitchcock's original vision. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

Love, drama, and a good story line. This 1940's movie can hang with the best of them. Poor girl-wealthy husband with a secret. Very nice acting. I'm glad that i saw it....!

Very entertaining. I really enjoyed it...loved seeing these former stars, scenery, costumes, too. Where was Hitchcock featured in this movie?

Rebecca starts out as a very average romantic movie of that era. The performances are good but it doesn't grab your interest until all of sudden everything changes about 2/3rds through the movie and it becames a gripping tense story that Hitchcock became famous for.

What a great good old scary movie ! The cinematography, scenery and especially the men's clothing were beautiful. While I have seen this move before there was so much I had forgotten. And Mrs.Danvers is something else. If you like old movies and Hitchcock then this one is one is great. Gweno

Great movie, a true classic. The "making of" segments are very interesting also showing. Hitchcock was genius and Selznick had serious issues. Joan Fontaine and the Sir Larry at their best.

This movie is very well done. I rented it because I read the book by Daphne Du Maurier and I wanted to compare the two. The book was excellent and the movie is almost exactly the same. I loved the actors and their portrayal of the characters. This is not only a great Hitchcock film but it is also a good version of the book. The only difference is the ending of the movie spells it out for you while the end of the book leaves you without definite confirmation. The movie also gives you a sense of closure to the story.

Way back in the late '70s and early '80s, the Carol Burnett Show would do parodies of famous movies. This was one of them. If it weren't for the Carol Burnett Show, I would not have had any interest in Rebecca. For a Hitchcock/old movie fan such as myself, this is a great movie. Mrs. Danvers gets a little creepy (creepier) in one scene. Judith Anderson was perfectly cast for the part. In more recent years, the part was played by Dianna Rigg. She too knows how to be creepy and crazy (you should have seen her in Mother Love). On the Commentary, it was noted how often Lawrence Olivier put his hands on his forehead. Acting back then is a lot different the it is now but overall, the movie was great. Loved it.

I remember when I saw this movie many many years ago, that I liked it very much. Now I was understandably disappointed. It is not now what it was then. The story is a good one, but the way the movie goes, compared with new movies it would have even less than the three stars I am giving it. And it is not the technology, it is the acting, the way the story develops, etc. It's what happens with some cherished moments in the past brought to the actual time.
