I really enjoyed this dvd. I also rented the 1958 original version withMitzi Gaynor. Frankly I enjoyed this much more. All the speaking and singing parts were the same as the original, just at a quicker clip. Reba McEntire, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Alec Baldwin were terrific. Couldn't have asked for better casting. I would highly recommend it.

This was a one-time only stage performance of South Pacific. There were costumes, but no sets. As a result, one could really concentrate on the music and the singing, which was glorious. Reba's performance was outstanding, and Brian Stokes Mitchell was a revelation, particularly for those who know him primarily from his (non-singing) t.v. roles. Alec Baldwin was a bit of an unfortunate choice as Luther, particularly since he muffed his lines and can't sing, but this was a minor glitch in an otherwise wonderful experience. I'm so glad they decided to release this on DVD.
