A handful of college students looking for a good time are thrown into a world of danger in this homage to the slasher film cycle of the 1970s and '80s. Ben (Joel David Moore) has just been given his walking papers by his girlfriend and is deeply depressed. Needing a pick-me-up, Ben and his friend Marcus (Deon Richmond) head to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, and take in a "Haunted Swamp Tour," with master of ceremonies Shawn (Parry Shen) guiding guests through a spooky patch of bayou country. Along the way, Ben and Marcus meet a pair of half-bright exotic dancers, Misty (Mercedes McNab) and Jenna (Joleigh Fioreavanti), as well as Marybeth (Tamara Feldman), a pretty girl who is secretive about her past. As they tour the swamp, Shawn tells his customers about the local legend of Victor Crowley, a deformed man who was taunted by the other children living near the swamp until he was nearly bludgeoned with an axe by his father while trying to open the door of their burning shack. While Ben and Marcus don't think much of the story at first, it doesn't take long before they have serious reason to believe Victor Crowley is still at large -- and is looking to settle some old scores. Hatchet received its world premiere at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

So much fun. Definitely worth seeing, but make sure you have a good sense of humor and don't expect everything to be realistic. The casting was perfect for this kind of movie, the effects were incredible (no cgi!), the story was like Friday The 13th Part 3.5, and the cameos were great. A true horror fan's delight. I felt like I did when first discovering slasher movies as a teen. Bravo and can't wait to see part II!

Not as bad as you may think. For a DVD horror movie, this film has it all. Real production value. (wasn't shot with a high 8 in your grandma's basement.) A great cast. (actors you've actually seen before!) and some decent innovations in the horror genre. Horror fans may be a little disappointed in some of the character makeup with the main monster, but you're all jaded anyway. There is plenty of GORE! Also has the best damned Tony Todd cameo in history...

Was a pretty good movie despite the weird music at times. Hot chicks and a few laughs here and there make it watchable.

One of the best horror movies that I have seen in years.

By far one of the top 5 worst movies I've seen in my life. I do not recommend that anyone waste time or effort getting and watching this movie. Very fake, terrible acting and borderline comedy. NOTHING like the trailer, totally misleading. Turn away and do not look back!

I want to start by saying I grew up with 80's horror films & it is a part of who I am (for better or worse). I constantly hope for another great horror with all the chills & none of the nonsensical humor directors feels blends well with horror. I am here to say I had the highest of hopes for Hatchet & was anxiously awaiting it's DVD release. I saw it clocked in at 83 minutes & that gels with your standard 80's horror flick length. It had a great trailer but the movie is NOTHING like the trailer & that is not a good thing in this case. The sets were lame, the scares were non-existent (for me anyway), and the gore was over the top cheesiness. The actors were a mixed bag of cliches. Sadly, Victor Crowley was laughable as the victim/villan & I actually was laughing out loud when he burst through doorways, etc. & puffed out his latex muscles. Anyway, rent "The Descent" if you want to experience true bone-chilling horror. This is a dud wrapped in pretty Xmas paper for us............

There are two things that can save a horror film from self-destruction, low budget or otherwise, good cinematography and great make-up. This film was severely lacking in both and couldn't help but implode, bad script and all. Though the acting was pretty decent, all things considering, it could not carry the dead weight.

This movie was very interesting, but it just did not end the right way.

Easily one of the best slasher movies I've ever seen. In the style of the great old-school horror movies, Hatchet is packed full of thrills, campy humor, and nasty brutal violence that we all come to know and love. Kane Hodder (Jason from Friday the 13th parts 7-10) has become another icon in American horror.

Like many of the nearly forgotten 80s slasher movies this movie was pretty cheesy. A lot of blood and gore in death scenes. Main characters male and female lead - only 2 characters with any sense. Funny token black guy. Stupid other girls perfect to be picked off one by one. I was entertained. I don't think this was very scary, but it was fun to watch. Modern version of classic horror is right but this was not as good. Worth a watch for slasher fans.
