They should have renamed this "The Barber of Arabia" because they moved the location from Spain to the Mideast. I would not mind so much but the costumes and sets are not particularly attractive. Every production I have seen of "The Barber of Seville" is better than this DVD. On the other hand, the picture, sound, and performances are all good.

If you like your opera up close and personal, this is the video for you. The director has a love affair for extreme close-up shots -- great for checking make-up lines or counting sweat droplets -- but also great for seeing the energy the principals are putting into their roles. All the principals are in fine voice -- especially Joyce DiDonato -- whose comic skill matches her vocal technique. All in all, a very enjoyable performance -- up close and personal.

Unique costuming. More comedy than in most performances. Love Berta's character.

Joyce DiDonato is wonderful! All the principal singers are excellent. The production is ridiculous. Why is this set in - maybe - Turkey?
