Two strong-willed women wield their influence on a shy teenaged boy in this coming-of-age comedy from the United Kingdom. Seventeen-year-old Ben (Rupert Grint) is the son of a soft-spoken vicar (Nicholas Farrell), but it's his mother, Laura (Laura Linney), who rules the household, and she has put Ben cheerfully under her thumb, keeping him busy with a variety of good-will errands for the church and numerous local charity causes. With summer vacation looming before him, Ben is looking forward to learning to drive, but Laura is more interested in spending time with one of the more charming members of the church staff than helping Ben learn how to operate the family automobile. Wanting to earn some pocket money, Ben starts looking for a part-time job and ends up working for Evie Walton (Julie Walters), an elderly and slightly eccentric actress who needs help keeping her garden in shape. Laura believes Evie isn't an especially good influence on her son, though Ben is happy to find someone who encourages his interest in poetry and the larger world (especially girls). One day, Evie announces that she needs to ride to Edinburgh, where she is supposed to give a reading as part of the city's massive music and arts festival. While Ben doesn't have his license, he volunteers to take the wheel, and soon he's confronted with various forms of decadence that his mother has frequently warned him to avoid. Driving Lessons received its North American premiere at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This movie is different, but a really beautiful story of a friendship between a 17 year old and an old actress. It follows how they are connected to each other and how they help each other be themselves in the long run. It's also entertaining to see Rupert Grint, Ron Weasley from Harry Potter, get to kiss a girl and say more curse words other than "bloody hell." It will be added to my collection sometime in the future.

Rupert Grint plays a quirky teenager trying to find his niche in the world. He is hampered by a well-meaning but overbearing mother (Laura Linney). He takes a summer job as an assistant to an excentric aging actress (Julie Walters), and she takes him on the greatest adventures of his life. Overall, this movie is a blend of 'Harold and Maude' meets 'Saved'. If you like off beat comedy, this is an excellent pick.

This is a beautiful, funny, quirky and heart warming film by British director Jeremy Brock. This story is actually based on Jeremy's own life as a kid and has almost a Harold and Maude sort of feel to it.... Rupert Grint plays Ben who is a quiet teenager suffocated by his crazy fanatical religious mother played by the lovely Laura Linney. When he meets Evie a retired actress (Julie Walters) his entire world is turned up side down. He's doing things he never dreamed and his mother pretty much thinks Evie is the DEVIL there to corrupt her son. It's not like that at all though. She teaches Ben about love and life and living and breaking free and in return she learns quite a bit from him too! Not a boring moment. The dialogue is British humor at its best and Rupert Grint holds his own among Walters and Linney...He has great comedic timing and shakes off the Ron Weasley persona 100%! I highly highly recommend this film to anyway who wants a good laugh and a great story to go along with it.

not a comedy! slow moving drama. 17 year old boy grows up with religious parents, but starts to break away from their strick rulse when he decides he's a poet . He becomes a companion for older female poet, who brings him on small adventures away from his norm (she makes him drive). more about life lessons....okay message, but I could have guessed it in the first 15min

I first hear about this film on "Biography" channel. I'm glad I did. Rupert Grint is a joy to watch; had know doubt that he could lead a film. He has an ability to say alot without opening his mouth. To see him and Mz. Walters in different roles than the ones they play in "Harry" film was fun too. I have always enjoyed her. She made want to "work" for Evie Walton too. Laura Linney is wonderful as Ben's well meaning if not misguided mother. Hop in and take a ride you'll be glad you did... I was.

I loved this one! The story is easy to follow, funny in a touching way, and gives parents a side view of the teen angst that we have all experienced. Rupert Grint breaks out from his Harry Potter role in a strong portrayal that has him lost in the adult world and struggling to stay afloat in his teen world. Julie Waters is flighty, nerve-wrecking, and just perfect in her part of Evie. This movie is one to be watched more than just once if not for the story than for the beautiful scenery of Europe.

It was not really a bad movie; it was just very slow and boring.

I thought this movie was okay for a rental. It's certainly not something that I would watch again. It was slow & a little boring. The plot was dumb. The only redeeming quality was that the acting was pretty good.

DRIVING LESSONS... Don't expect too much and you'll love it. My son tells me, "Rent it, it's awsome." I expected too much and hated it. Not only did I not finish it, I blocked out the part that I did watch. There's something in there about an elderly actress. I don't know, it's blocked. Rent something else, but don't ever, no matter what, even if it's free, don't ever, and I mean it, don't watch FOUR ROOMS. HELLO... BLOCKBUSTER... I'm still waiting on my 90 minute refund for that one and my 30 minute refund on this one! Shake it off, shake it off...
