Rambling Rose is the most part a flashback, related by grown-up Southerner Buddy Hillyer (John Heard). The bulk of the film takes place in 1935, when rambunctious backwoods housekeeper Rose (Laura Dern) virtually invades the Hillyer household. Daddy Hillyer (Robert Duvall), a bed-rock Southern gentleman, welcomes the congenitally amoral but basically goodhearted Rose into his house, carefully fending off her ill-timed romantic advances. But Rose can't help feeling smitten with him; meanwhile, she has also drawn the attentions of 13-year-old Buddy (Lukas Haas). Based on the novel by screenwriter Calder Willingham, Rambling Rose was not the box-office breakthrough that many expected for director Martha Coolidge; though it fizzled financially, the film did manage to secure Oscar nominations for both Dern and her real-life mother Diane Ladd. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This was an interesting film - and I liked it - for the most part. Duvall was his most brillant self as usual. What I did not like was the score - hoaky and not up to par with the calibar of the rest of the movie - so bad we found it quite annoying and even comical at times. But over all I'd say it was good movie with a little more plucking and a little more budget it could have been great. Duvall saves this film.

will not be disappointed. A humanistic and progressive portrayal of a woman, wife and mother decades ahead of her time. Wry commentary on Depression era politics and social mores, and some wicked funny scenes of youthful sexual exploration that most guys will relate with easily. Why did we never hear of this one?

Overall I felt the film was well composed. It really conveyed the time period and locale. The characters were extremely well played by all, however there was a definite under-lying feeling of major dysfunction within each.

Excellent movie - Shows you how much our thinking has changed in 75 years. Duvall portrayed the southern gentleman perfectly. Laura Dern was perfectly cast as the rambunctious housekeeper. This is a must see picture.

A great southern story. Laura(Rose) Dern and Diane Ladd were outstanding in their roles of very different southern woman. Rose's appeal to the 13-year old Billy was interesting to watch. Rose's good hearted but amoral attitude to life was sort of appealing. And she was sort of pretty. I liked this movie

Laura Dern was magnificient. She outdid Robert Duval, not easy to do. A very worthwhile movie. I thought the music was wonderfull especially Louie Armstrong playing during the final credits.
