A complicated thriller, directed with great visual style by Brian De Palma, Raising Cain is the story of twin brothers, Carter and Josh (John Lithgow), one good and one evil, who will stop at nothing to find children to further their father's psychological experiments. John Lithgow is outstanding in the role of the brothers. Lolita Davidovich, is also good as his wife Jenny, who he may or may not have murdered. To even identify the other characters would give away too much of the complicated plot, which twists and turns, leaving the audience constantly guessing who is really who. The film is darkly comic and De Palma and his unusual plot devices play homage to Alfred Hitchcock, along with Orson Welles and Michael Powell's Peeping Tom. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

This is not a perfect film, but consider the genre and the era. If you like John Lithgow, this is a classic!

Raising Cain is so underrated and I just don't get it. I honestly think this is one of the best thrillers I've ever seen. Brian DePalma is a genius! It was written brilliantly and the directing was amazing. DePalma has an uncanny way of taking anything and making it completely frightening. This was very entertaining, very stylish, and very thrilling. My heart was pounding out of control during many of the scenes. If you like good thrillers...rent this right away!

For its time, Raising Cain was innovative and imaginative. While not a great movie, it was clever at times and Lithgow was xlnt again in a dramatic villain role(s). Some shortcomings such as lack of true protagonist that we care about keep this from being a great movie, but worth watching if you like this genre.

If you only know John Lithgow from his comedy roles, you should check out the awesome job he does in this suspenseful movie. I've seen it twice and will likely see it again!

I am wondering if the other reviewer and I actually watched the same movie...I didn't hate it, but it sure wasn't very good. Definitely strange, and the plot did twist, but there were So many un-necessary scenes and such goofy dialogue that I just couldn't get into it. I understand that it is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek movie and I get the dark humor, but I just didn't like it.

I'm sorry, Michael S., but this movie was extremely hard to follow. Between the flashbacks, the dream sequences and the flashbacks of dream sequences, I stopped caring about a 1/4 of the way through this movie. It's on my list of movies that I feel I lost valuable hours of my life watching.

I couldn't sit through this movie. It was odd, hard to follow, and dark. I was very disappointed!

What was De Palma thinking? Lithgow is laughable when the character is supposed to be menacing or dark. The dialogue is full of cliches and unrealistic conversation. The characters are two-dimensional cartoons. None of the actors seem very invested in their parts. So much not to like about this movie, but the fake, bad accents of several characters is the most irritating factor. A very trite and hammy movie throughout. Forgettable and not worth the time it takes to watch it.
