A free-spirited art student and a roguish poet find their addiction to each other taking a back seat to their taste for heroin in director Neil Armfield's intensely personal tale of recreational drug use gone bad. When Candy (Abbie Cornish) and Dan (Heath Ledger) first fell in love, they both thought they had found all they ever needed in life. Despite financial hardships, the pair sustained themselves on the vibrant life force that burned blindingly bright as it promised an invincible future. Their intoxicating romance a blissful altered state of which heroin played only a minor role in the beginning, Candy and Dan soon decide to strengthen their bond by marrying and starting a family. Their manufactured Eden gradually becomes an uncontrollable inferno, however, as Candy's parents slowly pull away due to the pain of witnessing their daughter's slow slide into oblivion, and even chemistry professor Casper (Geoffrey Rush), who was at first complicit in their experimentation, admits that Candy and Dan's blind devotion to the drug is now forever ingrained into their commitment to one and other. As the marriage deteriorates right along with Candy's increasingly fragile mental state, Dan must make the difficult decision to either rescue her or pull away in hopes that the clarity of separation will finally empower her to break free of the addiction that binds her. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I thought this was a great role for Heath. The movie begins with the pleasures and thrills that come from the initiation into the world of drugs. It also shows that what initially binds a couple together can keep them together even through the most horrific means of supporting a drug addiction. For anyone who has had a drug addiction or been in love with someone who has, I believe this movie was an accurate portrayal.

Candy was one of the more real, gritty portraits painted beautifully and with a great sense of understanding of the habits of how it is to be an addict. The plot showed the depth of suffering attached to the painful lifestyle and shows the inevitable consequences of living such a life. Even without Heath, you will find the strength of plot would have been able to carry any actor. A definite must see.

I found this movie to be done very well. The acting was great. The storyline was kinda sad, and rather deep, though. But you really wanted to know how these people straighted out their lives. The movie was something that keeps you on the edge of your seat, And it does have a good message about drug abuse.

I think most of the people that are saying this movie is just about a bunch of junkies that doesn't need to seen are the people that are blind to the fact that we have a drug problem in this country, and around the world. They think that by ignoring it, the problem goes away. When in fact, we NEED to show this movie to young people BEFORE they start getting offered drugs to give them an added incentive to say NO. We all know that kids don't listen to us, even the good ones will go off to college and start drinking, so what's to stop them from falling down the wrong path? This movie is a heart-breaking example of what drugs can do to even the best of kids, and should be required material that parents watch WITH their children. There is some nudity, which is uncomfortable to watch with your kids, but the good moral of the movie far outweighs any nudity that they can easily bring up on the computer or flipping through the cable stations.

Unlike similar movies dealing with drug addiction such as Spun and Trainspotting, I found myself more sympathetic towards the characters here. Solid performances by Abbie Cornish and Heath Ledger as well as by supporting actor Geoffrey Rush. Hard to watch and should be. Despite the fact that this film is about drug addiction - it remains a bitter-sweet romance. Heath Ledger shall be missed.

I loved this movie, it hits close to home to so many american families who deal with someone with an addiction, it gives the addicted persons point of view. you can not watch this movie and not be touched and feel sorry for the couple. it is sad, heartbreaking, and very educational. i would reccomend this movie to anyone!

Not too keen on all the drug stories, but if you look at it as an attempt to capture the world that drug users live in, it is quite well done.

This was Heath Ledger's best acting. It was like watiching a train wreck that you can't turn away from. Heath and Abbey's performace in this movie was believeably heartwrenching. I heard of this movie while on a different website and had to get it and I wasn't disappointed. If you want to watch a movie that shows two people in love but are more in love with heroin, this is your movie to watch. Love this movie, but is heartbreaking, and it will be awhile before watching it again.
