This novel fusion of car-chase film and spooky horror became a surprise box-office hit in 1975. The story begins with car enthusiasts Frank (Warren Oates) and Roger (Peter Fonda) taking their wives, Kelly (Lara Parker) and Alice (Loretta Swit), on a vacation in a recreational vehicle. Their camping trip goes horribly awry when Frank and Roger accidentally stumble upon a group of hooded cultists committing a human sacrifice. The cultists give chase and the two couples barely escape with their lives. They go to the local police for help, but the officers can find no evidence to back up the story and send the two couples on their way. As they try to continue their vacation, strange events continue to occur that culminate in four protagonists and their cultist tormentors having a brutal automotive showdown on the open road. The end result of all this genre-hopping suffers from a lightweight approach that downplays the story's darker and more interesting elements, but still manages to deliver plentiful action and a few genuine chills. As a result, Race With the Devil became an unexpected success for 20th Century Fox and remains something of a cult favorite. ~ Donald Guarisco, Rovi
I have always liked this movie as a child and loved being able to watch it again. It brings me back to a time where they didn't need to add so much blood and guts and men in plastic alien costumes ("Signs") to scare people. It lets your imagination draw your own conclusion. And it was scary because I grew up in an area like that.
I wouldn't listen to those who say this movie isn't worth watching. Always try it for yourself. I loved this movie as a child-I coul never watch the ending, but now it's one of those great old classics you want to watch staying up late with a bowl of popcorn. Sure, there isn't a whole lot of gore, but the storyline and actors are pretty good. For those who love the old B-rated classics, this is a movie for you.
I have to defend this movie from the above review. The movie really isnt that bad. It's from the 70's. For those who can remember movies from the 70's and even the early 80's blood and gore wasnt all that "real" and well acting was just that acting. I like the movie and when it comes on TBS (about once a year) I usually watch it.
My mother had told me she had watched this movie and couldn't sleep after watching it, so I thought I'd give it a try. This may not seem incredibly scary to a lot of people that are used to today's horror movies, but it definitely freaked me out. The thing that really made it so scary is that the events in the movie could really happen to any of us. Just when you think it's safe, is it really?
I remember watching this movie when I was little and thought it was pretty scary. Of course I was only eight. Well - I'm not little any more and the movie is a bit dated by today's standards, but I'd like to see it again for the sake of nostalgia.
A great mix of horror chills and 1970s stuntman movie thrills. Watching a film like this makes me miss the pre-Stars Wars style of filmmaking. Hollywood makes far too many blockbusters and not enough tightly made flicks like this one.
I won't recommend this movie at all. It seems to have been a very low budget film that some very well known actors starred in. They must have needed money very bad.
