Tom Selleck stars as American cowboy archetype Matthew Quigley in Simon Wincer's outback western Quigley Down Under. Answering an advertisement placed by Australian cattle baron Elliot Marston (Alan Rickman) to come to the rugged and uncivilized Australian countryside and shoot dingoes, Quigley finds himself halfway around the world, only to find that Marston wants to exploit his talents as a sharpshooter in order to wipe out the Aborigine population. Taken aback by this square-jawed genocide, Quigley grabs Marston and hurls him through a window. Marston, who controls the region, sets out to hunt Quigley down. But helping him stay one step ahead of Marston is the addlebrained expatriate American trollop Crazy Cora (Laura San Giacomo) who insists that Quigley is her husband Roy. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

I was surprised at what a good film this is. Good developed story line and good acting, with Tom Selleck at his prime. Beautiful setting of the old West in Australia.

Great move! Husband watched 2 times before returning. Excellent actors, Tom Selleck and Alan Rickman. Rickman is the best bad guy around. Die Hard 2 was not the same without Hans.

Just OK. This is just a "western" transplanted to another west--Australia's. The local aborigines in this movie are the "oppressed people" that Quigley uses his "super power" to help. But the bad guys are stupid, use stupid tactics and inaccurate guns, whilst "our hero" Quigley can do no wrong. Being an ex-firearms instructor, I had to laugh at the ludicrous inerrant shooting of Quigley's supposedly super-long-range rifle, especially when quickly brought to the shoulder. I won a national championship in 1981, and could only DREAM of being able to shoot like that! It's a pretty predictable movie, and not un-enjoyable, just so-so.

I loved this movie. Tom Selleck did a great job in making this movie.

I actually enjoyed this movie enough to buy a copy only to find that this DVD version has been cut horribly (I will not justify it with the name editing). Many of the small things that help you to feel the lonely and isolated quality of the Outback territory (a major factor in this movie) were deleted from the DVD version that are still shown in the VHS and even the Broadcast versions. This is a case of hurrying a DVD to market without any reguard for the end viewer or the artistic quality of the film. I still recommend this movie to friends but I suggest to them to watch it on cable or rent the VHS version.

Rather predictable and poorly acted movie imho. Was this a "real movie" or just a tv movie? Seems more like a low-budget tv movie, to me. I say "skip it" unless you're really a Tom Selleck fan or have seen every other western genre movie!
