Set against the backdrop of the bloody battle waged between New York City cops and the Russian mafia in the 1980s, director James Gray's period drama tells the tale of an emerging club manager whose family ties to law enforcement make him a target for the city's most dangerous criminals. Bobby Green (Joaquin Phoenix) manages one of Gotham's hottest clubs, but being in the club scene often means turning a blind eye to blatant criminal activities. Realizing that his career -- and perhaps his life -- could come to a sudden end if anyone discovers that his father, Bert (Robert Duvall), is the deputy chief of police and his brother, Joseph (Mark Wahlberg), is a rising star on the force, Bobby struggles to keep that sensitive information from everyone except his devoted girlfriend, Amada (Eva Mendes). Russian kingpin Vadim (Alex Veadov) is a ruthless criminal who is willing to permanently silence anyone who dares cross him -- regardless of whether the person is a stranger on the street or a lifelong member of the family. When the Russian mafia declares all-out war against the NYPD, conflicted Bobby is forced to choose between his life of luxury and the family that he has worked so fervently to separate himself from. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
One my favorite cop movies. Good story, intense & suspensful throughout. I found the moral dilemas within the family realistic & it made the story that much more complelling. Having lived in NYC, I also enjoyed use of the real-life locations; Cue Motor Inn & El Caribe (although the latter is a nice restaurant, not a night club).
It was ok at best. It is an average movie that gets by on the charm of Wahlberg and Phoenix. Oh and a guy by the name of Duvall is in it....he's pretty good...might have a future.
THIS WAS A GOOD MOVIE , BUT IT WAS JUST MISSING SOMETHING. IT WAS ONE OF THOSE MOVIES THAT IF IT HAD SCORESE DIRECTING ,IT WOULD HAVE BEEN REALLY GOOD I'M SURE. PHOENIX IS ALWAYS GREAT , I WATCHED IT JUST FOR HIM ALONE.
Joaquin Phoenix, as usual, gave a great performance. I thought Mark Wahlberg was kind of wasted in this movie. It wasn't exactly what I thought it was going to be, I expected more action, but I liked it.
Took us two nights just to get into this movie. We couldnt get more than 10 minutes into it before we turned it off and finally just forced ourselves to watch it.
Long, drawn out, no action, boring...
I would expect more out of this ensemble cast.
This move was great, with a great cast, but the terrible language during the whole movie ruined it for me. I watched it with a clearplay dvd player and took out the language and nudity. So I'm not sure how many scenes I missed, but there were several pauses in dialogue because of the bad language being silenced out.
