Purple Rain, the first starring film for Prince, is the story of an arrogant, young black singer, born and raised in Minneapolis, who reaches the pinnacle of stardom. The dramatic complications include "The Kid's" (Prince) miserable home life, where he suffers the brutalities of his father (well played by Clarence Williams III) and the youth's efforts to win the love of the beautiful Apollonia. Despite the misogynistic undercurrents in Purple Rain, the film's biggest fans were young women. Gorgeously photographed by Donald Thorin, Purple Rain is essentially a glorified music video, highlighted by a catalogue of Prince's hits, including I Would Die 4 U, When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy; the score deservedly won an Academy Award and a Grammy. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Could watch it again and again, in fact I have!! I'm a big Prince fan from the early 80's & I just love this movie - not so much for the story but for all of the music performances. I highly recommend for any fan of Prince.

Purple Rain is a great movie! Maybe back in the day it didnt matter about acting really! This is a early 80's movie and Prince set a trend to use movie/music! Do you know how much money he prolly made from this>??? Thats why hes the artist! So, I love this movie it make me remember back in the day! Every old movie makes ya wonder about back in the day! But I love this movie and if, you dont understand Prince then dont buy! You gotta love the music first before you can like this movie! GREAT OLD MOVIE! Money Maker!! lol

I loved the music in the movie, but the acting sucked ( who watched for the acting anyway?). I was surprised at how well this movies looks and sounds in HD.

Who told Prince he could act. Sing, maybe on a good day if the planets are aligned just right but act (NO WAY). Chalk this up to yes men telling their meal ticket that a movie is a good idea. Pure drivel with no redeeming performances or anything even remotely worthwhile.
