Francois Girard's adaptation of Alessandro Baricco's novel Silk stars Michael Pitt as a young Frenchman who travels to Japan at the request of a wealthy silkworm magnate who asks him to smuggle back some new worms. The mission succeeds, and this allows the man to live in great comfort with his wife (Keira Knightley). After a few years, they are unable to conceive a child, a situation that leads to the man taking on a lover during his subsequent visits to Japan. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

I had a hard time sympathlzing with the main character, who travels to the Orient on business and has sex with a strange woman, then risks losing his lovely wife back home and his life to find her. What a jerk!

For something a little more exciting than this movie, you might want to buy some paint, paint a wall, and then sit back and watch it dry. Seriously, this movie may be visually attractive, but it is so INCREDIBLY dull, I fell asleep three times. I'm not sure how Michael Pitt got this gig...but I'd be surprised if he works again. Don't waste your time on this one...

40 minutes is all I could do... Very, very slow moving. The narrating killed me and my friend who was watching it with me. He asked me to please turn it off that he would rather have silence then to keep the movie going. Not worth the watch at all!

This movie makes my top 20 list. Don't pay attention to the bad reviews if you are a discriminating movie viewer. It has beautiful cinematography and subtle acting. Only for those who enjoy great beauty and subtlety.

Interesting look at the first contact between cultures.....not sure why the main character was so obsessed with the foreign woman or why his wife put up with his wandering back and forth. But i guess you don't really understand obsession anyway. Just ok....not fabulous.

It was a little slow to start but got better.

While I enjoy Keira Knightley's acting ability and movie choices, I found this movie to be so slow....scenery was beautiful and the director of photography knew his or her stuff...and the movie was poetically romantic, but gosh, I almost fell asleep.

Viewers and reviewers who do not understand nor appreciate European pacing or film themes should stick to liking Art that they don't know anything about. This film is a visual and romantic gem. The fact that it was filmed with spoken English misled some to believe they were going to see a Hollywood production.
